Black Mirror Mobile Game: Netflix's New Interactive Experience

Black Mirror Season 7 Launches with Companion Mobile Game
The seventh season of “Black Mirror” debuted on Thursday, accompanied by the release of a new mobile game directly linked to one of its episodes.
Introducing “Thronglets”
Developed by Night School Studio, a division of Netflix, the game is titled “Thronglets” and functions as a companion experience to the “Plaything” episode.
Players are tasked with nurturing virtual yellow creatures, striving to maintain their well-being. Successful care leads to replication, escalating the demands on the player’s resources and attention.
Gameplay and Moral Choices
These creatures aren't simply digital pets; they can accumulate resources, advance technologies, and explore new environments.
Players can also unlock tools and structures to accelerate their progress.
Despite initial similarities to classic games like Tamagotchi, “Thronglets” presents a darker twist. The creatures possess sentience and engage in direct communication with the player.
For instance, observing the player’s use of an axe for tree felling, a creature might propose bones as a more efficient alternative, prompting a difficult ethical decision.
Players must then contemplate sacrificing some creatures for their bones to expedite the process.
Netflix’s Evolving Gaming Strategy
Netflix’s initial foray into gaming lacked a clear direction, but the company has recently outlined a more focused approach.
Going forward, Netflix will concentrate on four core game types:
- Narrative games connected to Netflix series
- Gaming experiences designed for children
- Multiplayer party games
- Potential mainstream hits, including licensed tie-ins
The “Black Mirror” game aligns with this new strategy, representing a move towards creating games based on popular Netflix properties.
Availability and Previous Efforts
“Thronglets” is currently available to all Netflix subscribers on both iOS and Android platforms.
While Netflix has previously released games inspired by its intellectual property, this marks the first instance of a game directly interwoven with the storyline of a specific episode.
Previously, Netflix’s gaming releases were somewhat unfocused, encompassing indie titles, established games, and IP-based projects.
Strategic Shift and Cancellation of Netflix Stories
However, inconsistent success rates led to the cancellation of “Netflix Stories,” a narrative game featuring shows such as “Love Is Blind.”
Jeet Shroff, vice president of games technology and portfolio development, revealed at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) that the company is now prioritizing the four aforementioned game categories.
Mainstream Appeal and Success of Squid Game: Unleashed
“Thronglets” falls into the mainstream category, demonstrating a strategic decision to leverage the popularity of a flagship show.
Squid Game: Unleashed, another mainstream release, has reportedly achieved over 20 million downloads, as reported by Sensor Tower, a market intelligence firm.
This success underscores the potential of linking popular shows with engaging gaming experiences.
