Netflix Launches HBCU Boot Camp with Norfolk State | Tech Opportunities

Netflix is initiating a new educational endeavor.

In collaboration with Norfolk State University, the university attended by a leading software engineer at Netflix, and the digital learning platform 2U, Netflix is creating a virtual training program to introduce students to careers in technology.

Beginning immediately, Netflix is accepting applications from 130 students for a 16-week program that will commence in January.

The program will consist of three specialized areas of study: Java Engineering, UX/UI Design, and Data Science. Netflix professionals will collaborate with 2U in the development of each area, and all courses will be taught by professors from Norfolk State University, supplemented by guest speakers working in the technology sector, according to the company.

Professionals from Netflix’s data science, engineering, and design departments will provide mentorship, including Norfolk State graduate Michael Chase.

Netflix will cover all costs for students who are accepted into the program, and successful completion of the boot camp will result in academic credit, the company stated.

“We aim for participants to enhance their skills with practical, current knowledge needed for today’s job market and to establish meaningful, enduring professional connections,” explained Kabi Gishuru, Director of Inclusion Recruiting Programs, in a company announcement. “As we dedicate resources to developing a superior service for our audience, we also want to invest in a top-tier team to maintain it. Fostering inclusivity within the industry will undoubtedly strengthen it.”
