Emmys 2021: Netflix & Apple TV+ Dominate with 'The Crown' & 'Ted Lasso'

Netflix Achieves Record-Breaking Emmy Wins
Netflix secured the highest number of Emmy Awards ever received by a single platform, totaling 44 wins. This includes 11 awards specifically for The Crown, exceeding the achievements of its closest competitor, HBO/HBO Max, by more than double.
The 2021 awards ceremony marked a significant milestone for Apple TV+, as the platform garnered 10 Emmys. Seven of these were awarded to the comedy series Ted Lasso.
A Combination of Creative and Primetime Awards
A substantial portion of Netflix’s Emmy success stemmed from the 34 Creative Arts Emmys awarded the previous week. Nevertheless, the platform also secured an additional 10 Primetime Emmys.
These Primetime wins included acting accolades for Olivia Colman, Gillian Anderson, and Josh O’Connor for their performances in The Crown. Ewan McGregor was also recognized for his role in Halston. The Crown further distinguished itself with wins for writing and directing, ultimately claiming the coveted title of best drama series.
Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit was honored with the award for best limited series.

Apple TV+ experienced its most successful Emmy season to date, accumulating a total of 10 awards, with seven being Primetime Emmys. The platform achieved dominance in the comedy series category.
Ted Lasso secured seven wins, including three acting awards for Brett Goldstein and Hannah Waddingham (recognized as best supporting actors) and Jason Sudeikis (awarded best actor). The series also received the award for best comedy series.
Largely due to the success of Ted Lasso, Apple TV+ outperformed many of its competitors. Disney+ received a total of 14 awards, an increase from eight in 2020, but only one was a Primetime Emmy – awarded to Hamilton for best pre-recorded variety special.
Amazon and Hulu did not receive any Emmy Awards in 2021, despite having won awards in the previous year.
HBO/HBO Max and Individual Achievements
HBO and HBO Max led all platforms with 130 nominations and ultimately took home 19 Emmys, including 9 Primetime awards. Jean Smart, for Hacks, and Kate Winslet, for Mare of Easstown, were recognized as best actresses in their respective comedy and limited series categories.
Michaela Coel received the award for best writing in a limited series for I May Destroy You, following a controversial omission from the Golden Globes nominations.
The Rise of Streaming Platforms
In 2018, Netflix notably tied with HBO (prior to the launch of HBO Max) for the most Emmy wins. This year, Netflix surpassed all rivals significantly, and streaming platforms collectively occupied the top four positions.
The sustainability of this trend remains uncertain as the pandemic subsides and subscription growth potentially slows.
