NASA Announces New Astronaut Class with SpaceX Veterans

SpaceX Alumni Transitioning to NASA Astronaut Corps

SpaceX has cultivated a notable record of former employees achieving significant success. Many have established leading companies within the space industry, while others have pursued careers as astronauts.

This week, NASA announced its 2025 astronaut class, featuring two individuals with strong ties to SpaceX: Anna Menon and Yuri Kubo. Both dedicated over a decade to SpaceX, contributing substantially to the company’s growth and prominence.

Anna Menon's Background

Menon began her tenure at SpaceX in 2018, following a distinguished career at NASA’s Mission Control Center, where she provided crucial biomedical support to astronauts.

During her time as a senior engineer at SpaceX, she focused on private astronaut missions. She also participated as a mission specialist and medical officer on the groundbreaking Polaris Dawn mission, which achieved the first-ever commercial spacewalk.

Yuri Kubo's Expertise

Kubo dedicated 12 years to SpaceX, initially serving as a Falcon 9 launch director. She subsequently held senior positions overseeing the Starshield program and the development of ground systems.

Rigorous Astronaut Training

The selection process was highly competitive, with these 10 astronauts chosen from a pool of over 8,000 applicants.

The training regimen is extensive, spanning nearly two years. It encompasses instruction in robotics, geology, foreign languages, space medicine, and simulated spacewalks, as well as flight training, according to NASA.

Future Missions and ISS Transition

Upon successful completion of training, these astronauts will join the existing team of over 40 active astronauts. They may contribute to NASA’s transition to commercially operated private space stations as the International Space Station (ISS) is retired in 2030.

Furthermore, they will be considered for future scientific missions to the Moon and Mars.

A Growing Trend of SpaceX Alumni at NASA

This isn't an isolated occurrence. Robb Kulin, a former SpaceX director of flight reliability, was selected as a NASA candidate in 2017. In 2021, Anil Menon – SpaceX’s inaugural flight surgeon and medical director – joined the Artemis generation of astronauts. (Notably, Anil and Anna Menon are married.)

This pattern highlights the increasing synergy between the leading private space company and traditional astronautical endeavors. SpaceX is not only facilitating private missions like the Polaris program but is also actively developing future astronauts.

Shifting Landscape of Astronaut Selection

Historically, NASA astronauts were primarily recruited from the military and academic institutions. The commercial space sector had limited involvement in identifying astronaut candidates.

However, SpaceX has fundamentally altered this dynamic. The company has become a vital training ground for engineers and mission operators specializing in human spaceflight.
