A Useful Firefox Addon: MyWords for Text Replacement

Discovering lesser-known Firefox extensions that provide distinctive and beneficial functionalities is something I particularly enjoy. Previously, I highlighted GrabThemAll as one such extension.

The addon discussed today shares similarities with desktop applications Karl previously examined: PhraseExpress and Texter.

Like those programs, this extension enables the creation of a database containing frequently typed phrases.

Introducing MyWords

MyWords [No Longer Available] is a straightforward yet effective automatic typing tool functioning as a fundamental text replacement solution for Firefox. It proves valuable for individuals who frequently type within their web browser.

While not overly complex, the tool is worth exploring if you:

  • Typically avoid sophisticated text replacement and form-completion utilities.
  • Appreciate small, practical tools that are readily available when needed.

Begin by installing the addon and then restarting your Firefox browser.

Putting MyWords into Action

Following installation and browser restart, you can immediately begin utilizing the tool's capabilities.

The core function of MyWords is to streamline your typing experience by substituting abbreviations with complete phrases.

This can significantly reduce repetitive strain and improve overall efficiency when working within the Firefox browser.

Configuring the Word Database

Access to your customized word database can be achieved through one of two methods.

Navigate to Tools -> Addons - MyWords (Options) to begin the setup process.

Alternatively, a right-click within any text field will reveal a MyWords menu, from which you can select Setup MyWords.

The setup interface is designed for ease of use.

  • Employ the "Add" button to introduce new phrases into the database.
  • Utilize the arrow keys to modify the order of phrases.

The phrase listed last will be substituted first, so prioritize frequently used phrases by positioning them at the end of the list.

It should be noted that the purpose of the "label" field remains unclear, despite attempts to determine its function.

Once your database is established, the Import/Export functionality allows you to preserve it and transfer it between different computers.

A crucial setting is the keyboard shortcut, which enables quick insertion and switching of phrases. The default shortcut is ALT+W.

Testing the Automated Typing Tool

With your database largely populated, you are now ready to begin utilizing the automatic typing software. Navigate to any webpage containing a text input field and initiate testing.

A right-click within any text input area will reveal a menu allowing you to select and paste one of your previously saved words at the current cursor location.

Important: New words can also be added to the database directly through this method. Simply select the text you have just typed and access the "MyWords" menu via a right-click to add it to your stored phrases.

The configured keyboard shortcut (established in a prior step) provides two functionalities:

  • It can insert your most recently favored phrase at the start of the input line, enabling cycling through saved phrases.
  • Alternatively, as you begin typing, the software will automatically suggest and complete your phrase using the best match from your database.

Limitations of the Current Tool

As previously noted, the tool’s capabilities are intentionally straightforward. Frequently, it is these simpler utilities that prove to be the most practical and dependable. However, certain features are currently absent, despite their potential value.

Missing Features

The tool does not currently offer several enhancements that would improve usability. These include:

  • An automatic completion function during text input, eliminating the need for keyboard shortcuts.
  • The capacity to incorporate pre-designed templates for extended text segments, utilizing variables such as [person’s name] or [due date]. These templates could be customized after pasting.

Users who utilize Firefox are encouraged to share any comparable tools they may have found helpful. Recommendations can be posted in the comments section below.
