The limitations of SMS, specifically its text-only format, led to the development of MMS. However, both SMS and MMS share a significant drawback: they are considerably more expensive than internet-based instant messaging and email services, which generally offer near-free communication.
Challenges with Traditional Instant Messaging
While instant messaging and email offer cost advantages on mobile devices, they present their own set of challenges. They often lack the immediate accessibility of SMS and MMS.
Users typically need to authenticate themselves – frequently re-authenticating – before sending messages. Furthermore, manually managing contact lists is required.
A common issue is the need to engage with multiple instant messaging platforms and install numerous clients to connect with all contacts.
Even consolidated instant messenger applications, such as imo.im and Digsby, still necessitate individual account registration and login procedures for each network.

WhatsApp distinguishes itself as a multi-platform messaging solution that effectively combines the ease of use associated with SMS/MMS with the robust capabilities of instant messaging.
It provides a streamlined experience, offering the convenience of SMS while leveraging the cost-effectiveness and feature richness of internet-based messaging.

Contact Management with WhatsApp
It’s important to acknowledge upfront that WhatsApp isn’t entirely without cost. While usage is free on Blackberry devices, a one-time fee of $0.99 applies for iPhone users. Android and Nokia users face an annual charge of $1.99, though the first year is provided at no cost. However, these expenses are minimal when weighed against the potential reduction in SMS and MMS messaging costs.
Like other instant messaging applications, WhatsApp utilizes your mobile data connection for message transmission. To acquire the application, navigate to the official WhatsApp website and select the download option. Be aware that compatibility isn’t universal across all Nokia models; a list of supported devices can be found on the WhatsApp Nokia download page.

Following installation, the application will automatically scan your existing address book. Individuals already utilizing WhatsApp will be added to your Favorites list. This list is fully customizable. Selecting the "Edit" button reveals a delete option on the left, and list order can be adjusted by tapping and dragging the bars located on the right.
WhatsApp provides the functionality to associate a status message with your name. Users can compose a personalized status or choose from pre-defined templates. This status is visible to your contacts, allowing them to determine the best time to reach out or respect your need for uninterrupted time.
The "Contacts" tab directly reflects your phone’s address book. You can search for specific contacts to initiate messaging or extend an invitation to download the WhatsApp client to those who haven’t yet adopted the service.
WhatsApp: Connecting Through Chats and Groups
A key strength of WhatsApp lies in its ability to facilitate group conversations. This functionality is readily accessible at the top of the "Chats" screen, alongside the "Broadcast Message" option.
The "Broadcast Message" feature enables the dispatch of a single message to multiple recipients simultaneously. This proves particularly useful when disseminating information to a large number of contacts. To initiate a broadcast, select the desired contacts, confirm your choices by tapping "Done", compose your message, and then send it.
Establishing a "Group Chat" is a straightforward process. Begin by defining a subject for the group, then add participants – a maximum of ten individuals can be included. Confirm your selections by tapping "Next" to finalize group creation.
Once created, messages typed within the group are delivered to all members. Each participant also possesses the ability to contribute to the conversation by sending messages to the entire group.
WhatsApp’s capabilities extend beyond simple text-based communication. Users can also share photos, videos, and audio files, as well as contacts and location data. Selecting the desired item is achieved by tapping the small upward-pointing arrow located to the left of the message input field. A progress bar indicates the status of the sending process.
Scrolling to the top of any chat reveals additional options. These include initiating a call to the contact, editing previously sent messages, and accessing further details about the individual from your address book. Older messages can also be loaded to review the chat history.
The call function facilitates a direct phone-to-phone connection and is not based on VOIP technology, such as that used by Skype.
Additional WhatsApp Features
Determining the value of your WhatsApp investment is possible by navigating to "Settings - Usage". Within this section, a comprehensive overview of your usage statistics is readily available.
Consider the cost of a single SMS message. Multiplying this cost by the total number of messages sent will reveal the equivalent expenditure.
WhatsApp also allows for personalization of your chat experience. Access "Settings - Chat Settings - Chat Wallpaper" to select a preferred image for your chat background.
Users can select images directly from their Camera Roll or Photo Library to serve as the background. Alternatively, WhatsApp provides a curated selection of background images within its Wallpaper Library.
While not a primary feature, the ability to customize the chat background enhances the overall user experience.
