While product demonstrations often capture the spotlight, the core of software development frequently centers around essential tasks such as debugging, quality assurance, and rigorous testing. This often-unseen work is vital for ensuring software operates correctly. As developers increasingly seek automation, artificial intelligence is playing a larger role in these processes.

Momentic Secures Series A Funding

On Monday, Momentic, an AI-powered testing startup, announced the successful completion of a $15 million Series A funding round. Standard Capital spearheaded the investment, with additional participation from Dropbox Ventures. Previous investors, including Y Combinator, FCVC, Transpose Platform, and Karman Ventures, also contributed to this round.

This new funding supplements a prior $3.7 million seed round announced in March, bolstering the company’s resources.

AI-Driven Software Verification

Momentic develops tools designed for software testing and verification. This field is currently dominated by open-source frameworks like Playwright and Selenium.

These existing tools provide detailed control options, but Momentic believes AI can streamline and enhance the effectiveness of the testing process.

Simplifying Testing with Natural Language

“Our primary goal is to guarantee the functionality of our customers’ products,” explained co-founder Wei-Wei Wu. “Users can articulate their key user workflows using simple, everyday language, and our AI will automate the testing procedures.”

Both Wu and his co-founder, Jeff An, bring extensive experience in developer tooling, having previously worked at companies such as Qualtrics and WeWork. Wu is especially recognized for his contributions to the open-source Node.js project.

A Persistent Challenge: Code Verification

Throughout his career, Wu consistently identified code verification as a significant challenge. “Testing has consistently been the most substantial obstacle for every development team I’ve been a part of,” Wu shared with TechCrunch.

Growing Customer Base and Automated Test Volume

Momentic’s AI-focused approach has already attracted a substantial clientele. The company currently serves 2,600 users, including prominent organizations like Notion, Xero, Bilt, Webflow, and Retool.

While Wu remained reserved regarding specific revenue and profitability details, he affirmed that the product’s growth trajectory has successfully attracted investor confidence.

Automating tests enables them to be executed on a much larger scale, potentially exceeding previous limitations. Momentic reports automating over 200 million test steps in the last month alone.

Competition from Foundation Models

A potential competitor lies in the emergence of powerful foundation models. Both OpenAI and Anthropic now offer guidance on agentic testing, leveraging the expanding capabilities of their models in computer usage.

As these models become more advanced, the market opportunity for specialized SaaS companies like Momentic may become more constrained.

Future Development and Expansion

Currently, Wu is concentrating on enhancing the product with the newly acquired funding. The company launched support for mobile environments in August and plans to develop more sophisticated test-case management features as the engineering team expands.

The Increasing Demand for Quality Assurance

Wu anticipates that the proliferation of automated coding will lead to a surge in new applications—and consequently, a greater need for robust testing solutions. “Every one of these applications requires testing,” he stated. “Maintaining quality is paramount, and we are dedicated to delivering that for our clients.”
