Molotov Expands Internationally to Africa - Seven New Countries

The French company Molotov operates an over-the-top (OTT) television streaming platform within France, offering live television broadcasts, premium channel access, a cloud-based digital video recorder, and a variety of on-demand programs. Despite achieving a user base of 13 million within France, the service has not yet been introduced to international markets.
Molotov is initiating its global rollout this year, with plans to launch in a total of twelve countries. The initial phase will focus on seven nations in Africa, beginning with Ivory Coast, where the service is currently available. Subsequent launches are scheduled for Senegal in January, Cameroon in February, Burkina Faso in March, Tunisia in April, followed by Guinea and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Jean-David Blanc, the service’s functionality remains largely consistent across regions, though the available content will vary. Molotov’s expansion strategy centers on establishing collaborations with local partners to facilitate its entry into new territories.
Currently, Molotov is collaborating with Digital Virgo, a mobile payment provider operating in forty countries. Digital Virgo will manage relationships with local content providers, while Molotov will oversee operations and the underlying technology infrastructure.
The initial channel lineup will consist of fifteen stations, including Nina TV, Passions TV, Trace Urban, Trace Africa, Trace Urban Africa, Savannah TV, Gametoon, Africanews, Euronews, France24, Trace Sport Stars, and DocuBox. Subscribers will also have access to Mango, Molotov’s advertising-supported on-demand streaming platform.
To facilitate its international ambitions, the company has upgraded its infrastructure to enhance its reliability and scalability. This includes increased reliance on cloud hosting solutions and partnerships with additional content delivery network (CDN) providers, resulting in improved performance even with limited bandwidth. This initial expansion represents only the beginning, as Molotov is currently in discussions with potential business-to-business (B2B) partners in Asia, South America, and Europe. Blanc stated that the company’s approach involves leveraging the expertise of local companies to launch Molotov in new countries, and further announcements regarding international expansion are anticipated.
