Take Control of Your Aging | Modern Age

Addressing the Challenges of Aging with a New Approach
The process of aging is universal, yet Modern Age is dedicated to assisting individuals in navigating this stage with improved health and vitality.
The company, founded by Melissa Eamer – previously a vice president at Amazon and COO of Glossier – has secured $27 million in Series A funding, spearheaded by Oak HC/FT.
A Personal Motivation for Longevity
Eamer’s interest in longevity stems from personal experience. Observing her parents’ aging process, she noted the disparities in how individuals experience later life, with some flourishing while others face rapid decline.
She considered the factors within an individual’s control, such as genetics and environmental influences. Initially intending to pursue a career in long-term care, Eamer found limited opportunities for MBA graduates within the sector.
Her time at Amazon provided a strong foundation in customer-centricity and leveraging technology for problem-solving, skills she now applies to Modern Age.
Empowering Healthier, Longer Lives
Modern Age aims to extend lifespan and enhance health through digital tools. These resources will help users explore their aging options, encompassing both telemedicine and in-person treatments.
Research indicates a correlation between perceived age and actual longevity; feeling younger is associated with a longer life. This insight prompted Eamer to focus on health and wellness strategies to positively influence subjective age.
Currently, many solutions address isolated concerns, like cosmetic treatments for age spots. However, Modern Age seeks to integrate various factors – including nutrition, sleep, fitness, skin health, bone density, and metabolism – into a holistic approach.
Computers excel at analyzing complex data, and Modern Age is harnessing this capability to create a powerful platform.
Personalized Assessments and Initial Focus Areas
Users begin with a comprehensive assessment to determine their perceived age and identify key areas for health and wellness improvement.
The company will initially concentrate on skin, hair, bones, and hormonal health. Visible signs of aging often appear in the skin and hair during the 30s, coinciding with the onset of bone mass loss – a frequently overlooked aspect of aging.
Hormonal balance significantly impacts energy levels, and Eamer highlights the prevalence of misinformation in this area, noting that many women are unaware of the link between low testosterone and fatigue.
Investment and Expansion
In addition to Oak HC/FT, GV and Juxtapose – which provided seed funding in 2020 – participated in this funding round, bringing the company’s total funding to $33 million.
Jed Cairo, co-founder and managing partner at Juxtapose, stated via email that Modern Age represents a compelling opportunity to utilize technology for hyper-personalized customer experiences and improved patient care, similar to successes with Care/of and Tend Dental.
A significant portion of the new funding will be allocated to the construction of Modern Age’s flagship clinic in New York City’s Flatiron district, slated to open in early 2022.
Investment will also be directed towards talent acquisition, technology development, and enhancing customer engagement.
Building a Dedicated Team
Currently employing 17 individuals, Modern Age anticipates expanding to a team of 50 by the end of 2022, excluding clinic staff.
The clinic will operate with its own dedicated clinicians and medical personnel, and Eamer plans to recruit a chief medical officer to collaborate with her.
The Future of Longevity Research
Annie Lamont, co-founder and managing partner at Oak HC/FT, emphasizes that the science of longevity is still evolving and represents a significant investment opportunity.
Companies like Longevica, Gero AI, and Rosita Longevity have recently garnered attention for their innovative approaches and funding success.
Lamont believes Eamer possesses the necessary experience and scientific grounding to establish Modern Age as a trusted and credible source of information on longevity.
“While fragmented solutions currently exist, how individuals feel is paramount, alongside scientific advancements,” she added. “Modern Age will serve as a central hub for accessing accurate information and evolving services in both the virtual and physical realms.”
