mit media lab names dava newman as new director

The renowned MIT Media Lab, a wellspring of innovative concepts and influential figures, has appointed a new director following an extensive global search. Dava Newman, a professor of aeronautics and astronautics at MIT and previously the deputy administrator of NASA during the Obama administration, will now lead this prominent research center.
The Media Lab is highly regarded for its dynamic and forward-thinking approach to technology and intellectual exploration. However, it has operated without a permanent leader for over a year, following the resignation of Joi Ito. Ito stepped down after revelations surfaced concerning funding received from Jeffrey Epstein, a billionaire accused of child sex trafficking, and reports of preferential treatment granted to him during Ito’s tenure.
The subsequent search for a new director undoubtedly aimed for a fresh perspective, though not necessarily a completely new face – Newman has a long-standing association with MIT. After considering sixty applicants and interviewing thirteen, the selection process culminated in Newman’s appointment, based on a number of key factors.
“Professor Newman distinguished herself among a highly qualified pool of candidates through her groundbreaking research, broad involvement in diverse disciplines, and proven leadership abilities. She embodies the roles of designer, thinker, creator, engineer, educator, mentor, facilitator, communicator, futurist, humanist, and, crucially, an optimist,” stated Dean Hashim Sarkis in the announcement of her appointment.
Interestingly, Newman recently participated as a speaker at TC Sessions: Space, where she discussed the significance of inclusivity in large-scale initiatives like NASA’s Artemis program, potentially foreshadowing her new role.
“Bringing together scientists and engineers is essential, but we also require the contributions of artists and designers – they are the ones who provide the vision,” she explained. (Those who were unable to attend the event can find recordings of this and other panels on Extra Crunch.)
Newman appears to be initiating her leadership by prioritizing a fundamental quality: actively listening to those she will be leading.
“My initial focus will be on listening and learning,” she shared in the MIT announcement. “I believe in meeting people where they are and fostering an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas. I am confident that collaborating with the entire community – faculty, students, and staff – will unlock everyone’s creative potential. I am eager to begin.”
