Mio Secures $8.7 Million Series A Funding for Enterprise Messaging Interoperability
Mio, a company focused on facilitating collaboration for enterprise teams across various messaging platforms – including Zoom Chat, Microsoft Teams, Slack, and Cisco Webex – has announced the successful completion of an $8.7 million Series A funding round.
Investment Details and Company Background
This funding round was spearheaded by Zoom and Cisco Investments. Since its founding in 2016, and following participation in the Y Combinator Winter 2016 program, Austin-based Mio has now accumulated a total of $17 million in funding.
Additional investors contributing to this round include Goldcrest Capital, Eniac Ventures, Two Sigma Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Y Combinator, and Capital Factory.
The Growing Need for Cross-Platform Communication
While internal communication within a single platform is generally straightforward, challenges arise when collaboration extends across different organizations. Previously, such interactions often relied on scheduled meetings, either in person or virtual.
However, the recent shift towards enterprise messaging services, accelerated by the pandemic, has highlighted the necessity for seamless communication across these platforms.

According to Mio CEO and co-founder Tom Hadfield, the investment from competitors like Zoom and Cisco demonstrates a growing recognition of the importance of interoperability within the industry.
He further pointed to recent partnerships, such as the collaboration between Microsoft and Meta on Teams and Facebook Workplace integration, and the ongoing partnership between Slack and Teams regarding VoIP integrations, as evidence of this trend.
Bridging the Gap Between Communication Networks
Hadfield explained that Microsoft Teams functions similarly to a Local Area Network, prioritizing communication between its own users. Conversely, communication between Teams and platforms like Slack requires traversing a “Wide Area Network” for workplace communications.
“This is precisely the functionality that Mio is engineered to provide,” he stated.
Technical Challenges and Solutions
Co-founder and CTO James Cundle and the Mio team have spent the past several years addressing the technical complexities of unifying diverse messaging clients.
These challenges include managing variations in features, such as Slack’s custom emoji support, and handling differences in channel structures. Furthermore, varying platform limitations and constantly evolving APIs present ongoing hurdles.

Hadfield drew a parallel to earlier “multi-headed clients” like Trillian, which connected various instant messaging services in the early 2000s. He also noted previous attempts at establishing open standards like XMPP and SIP.
“However, standards bodies were unable to keep pace with the rapid innovation in team collaboration,” he explained. “Mio overcomes this by utilizing publicly available APIs, allowing each platform to continue innovating independently.”
Competitive Landscape
The demand for a service like Mio has naturally attracted competition. Nextplane offers comparable capabilities, and Matrix provides an open-source protocol for decentralized messaging with bridges to platforms like Slack and Discord.
“We intend to collaborate closely with both Matrix and Nextplane to collectively advance a unified messaging ecosystem,” Hadfield affirmed.
Future Plans and Vision
Mio intends to allocate the newly acquired funds to expand service support to include platforms such as Google Chat, Meta’s Workplace, and Symphony.
The company also plans to introduce a new unified presence feature, enabling users to synchronize their status across different messaging services.
“This investment, coming from two leading companies in the collaboration space, marks a significant step towards greater interoperability,” concluded Hadfield. “It moves us closer to a future where seamless collaboration is possible for everyone, regardless of their preferred chat application.”
