Facebook to Google+ Friend Exporter - Chrome Extension

Migrating Facebook Friends to Google+
Many users are now aware of Google+'s increasing prominence and the resulting impact on Facebook. Perhaps you've embraced Google+'s platform? Are you concerned about potential repercussions for your Facebook presence?
A solution exists for transferring your existing Facebook connections to Google+, facilitated by the Facebook Friend Exporter Chrome extension. However, Facebook actively discourages this practice, leading to an ongoing challenge between the extension and the social network.
How the Extension Works
The extension’s creator, Mohamed Mansour, has committed to ongoing maintenance, stating, “I will maintain this version. Just bear with me.” This indicates a continuing effort to circumvent Facebook’s restrictions.
Currently, the Facebook Friend Exporter is exclusively compatible with the English language version of Facebook.
Language Considerations
If you typically use Facebook in a different language, a temporary workaround is available. You can modify your language preference within your Account Settings, then revert to your preferred language after the migration process is complete.
This allows the extension to function correctly while preserving your usual Facebook experience.
- The extension aims to simplify the transfer of your social network.
- Facebook actively attempts to block this functionality.
- The developer is dedicated to maintaining the extension’s effectiveness.
Successfully migrating your Facebook friends to Google+ can help you maintain your connections across platforms.
Cat & Mouse
Initially, acquiring a substantial number of Facebook connections for Google+ was a straightforward process following the release of Mansour’s extension shortly after Google+’s launch.
Installation was easily achieved through the Chrome Web Store with just a few clicks.
However, Facebook has since disabled Mansour’s initial method, leading him to share the following observation on Google+:
The consequence of an extension gaining popularity is this: Facebook has eliminated email addresses from its mobile website.
A rate-limiting system has been put in place, removing the email field if a user views the profiles of approximately five friends within a brief timeframe.
He further expressed his frustration, stating:
Despite this setback, a new version is under development. This situation underscores Facebook’s complete control over user data; individuals do not truly own their information.
Despite this challenge, Mansour has committed to updating his extension, meaning the process only needs to be completed successfully once to transfer your Facebook friends.
Let’s begin…

Installing the Extension
The process of installing this extension resembles a continuous effort to stay ahead in a dynamic situation. It’s possible that updates may render certain installation methods unnecessary.
The extension can be obtained directly from the Google Chrome Web Store here. It is highly recommended to click Install to verify the functionality of the current version. The installation is quick, and the extension can be easily disabled through the Extensions page within Chrome's settings if it proves ineffective.
To assess its operation, proceed to the Exporting Your Friends section of this guide. If the initial installation fails, return here for an alternative method.
Should the version from the Chrome Web Store be unsuccessful, Mansour also provides the source code on GitHub. This represents your access point to the most recent versions, which are more likely to function correctly!

Begin by navigating to Mansour's GitHub repository. Select the Downloads option and choose either the TAR.GZ or .ZIP archive format. The specific format chosen is immaterial, provided you can subsequently open the downloaded archive.
After downloading, extract the folder contained within the archive to a location you will readily recall.
Subsequently, open Google Chrome and type "chrome://extensions" (without the quotation marks) into the address bar. This will display a list of your currently installed extensions. Activate Developer mode via the drop-down menu and select Load unpacked extension.

Locate and select the folder you extracted earlier – ensure you choose the entire folder, not its contents or individual files. The Facebook Friend Exporter will then install and appear alongside your other extensions. Successfully installing from source has been achieved!
Transferring Your Facebook Connections
Following installation, navigate to the Facebook website to verify functionality. Successful installation should introduce a new option, Export friends!, alongside the standard Home and Profile buttons. Access to this feature requires being on your Friends page, located at facebook.com/friends/edit, after logging in.

Selecting Export friends! will open a new browser tab displaying a disclaimer and terms of service agreement. Confirm your acceptance by checking the designated box and then clicking Let's get started! to reveal your complete friends list.

The extension will then initiate the data extraction process, providing notifications as each contact is successfully copied. It’s important to refrain from interacting with Facebook during this operation. Upon completion, you will be prompted to download your Facebook contacts as a .CSV file, or to directly import them into Gmail under the label “Imported From Facebook”.

Before proceeding, you are given a final opportunity to deselect any friends you wish to exclude from the Google+ import. This allows for customized contact selection.

After importing into Gmail, your contacts will be visible within your Circles page. From there, you can organize and add them as desired, and Google will send notifications to those you select.
Final Thoughts
The transition process, regrettably, is somewhat precarious and demands meticulous attention to detail in certain areas. While the extension may require a considerable amount of time to finalize the migration, your subsequent objective will be to persuade your acquaintances of the merits of Google+.
