Jeff Teper, president of Microsoft 365 collaborative Apps and platforms, conveyed the company’s gratitude to Skype users. He stated that the experience gained with Skype over the past seven years has been instrumental in shaping Teams.
According to Teper, focusing solely on Teams will streamline messaging and accelerate the pace of innovation.
Options for Skype Users
Between now and May 5th, users will be presented with two primary options. They can transfer their contacts and chat history to the Microsoft Teams environment.
Alternatively, individuals can utilize Skype’s integrated export functionality to download their data for personal archiving.

The Rationale Behind the Decision
For observers of Skype's trajectory in recent years, the announcement is unlikely to be unexpected. In many respects, the indications of this outcome were apparent as early as 2016, coinciding with the introduction of Microsoft Teams.
Although Microsoft had previously released Skype for Business in 2015, the launch of Teams represented a shift in Microsoft’s strategy within the cloud communications sector. Initial reactions often compared Teams to Slack, however, the overarching goal was to develop a comprehensive platform.
This platform was intended to facilitate collaboration and communication across a diverse array of Microsoft applications, as well as those from third-party developers. It encompassed both video and text-based communication – directly competing with Skype’s core functionalities.
Microsoft announced the eventual discontinuation of Skype for Business in 2017, fully completing this transition in 2021. Subsequently, Teams was designated as the primary integrated communications application for Windows 11, effectively diminishing Skype’s prominence.
As reported by TechCrunch in December 2024, Microsoft ceased allowing Skype users to add credit to their accounts or purchase Skype phone numbers. This action steered users towards monthly subscription models and Skype-to-phone service plans.
This progression culminates in the current announcement, marking the end of a brand and company that emerged as a pioneering tech startup from Europe during the era of dial-up internet connections.
Skype’s phasing out occurs two years after Microsoft launched a completely redesigned Teams application for both desktop and web platforms. During this period, consumer calling minutes within Teams have increased fourfold, according to Teper, although the precise number of consumer users within the 320 million total user base remains undisclosed.
“We’ve reached a sufficient scale and are confident in the Teams application for personal use,” Teper stated. “Consumer adoption of Teams in their daily lives has been substantial, and we’ve carefully considered this shutdown, ensuring the product demonstrates readiness based on end-user feedback.”
Microsoft now believes that consumers are prepared for this transition.
Skype User Statistics
The introduction of Skype revolutionized communication via the internet, initially with voice calls, then expanding to include video conferencing and file transfers. However, the proliferation of smartphones and numerous new messaging applications has subsequently impacted Skype's user base over time.
To provide perspective, WhatsApp exceeded 2 billion users by the year 2020.
When Skype submitted its initial public offering (IPO) documentation in 2010, it reported 560 million registered users and 124 million monthly active users. Instead of proceeding with the IPO following its separation from eBay – which had acquired Skype in 2005 – Microsoft made an $8.5 billion offer for Skype in 2011.
This acquisition led to a peak of 300 million users for the platform in 2013.
Microsoft has generally refrained from regularly publishing specific Skype user figures in the years that followed, although occasional data points have been shared.
In March 2020, coinciding with the onset of the pandemic, the company announced a 70% month-over-month increase in Skype usage, reaching 40 million daily active users.
This surge was driven by individuals seeking to maintain connections with family and friends during lockdown periods, mirroring similar growth patterns observed in competing platforms like Zoom.
The latest data released by Microsoft came through a blog post in early 2023, detailing an integration between Skype and its Bing search engine.
The post indicated that “over 36 million individuals utilize Skype on a daily basis for both phone calls and chat communications” worldwide.
Ultimately, the stagnation of Skype’s user growth, contrasted with the expansion of Teams, is a key factor in Microsoft’s decision to fully focus on Teams.
“Skype experienced a temporary increase – as did Teams – during the pandemic, and Skype’s user numbers have remained relatively consistent in the past two years,” stated Teper.
“We determined that the timing and user feedback supported a transition to prioritize Teams.”

The Transition Away from Skype's Calling Features

Phase-Out of Skype's Phone Services
The process of discontinuing these services began in December. At that time, users were no longer permitted to add funds to their Skype accounts, and the purchase of new Skype numbers was suspended.
Existing users with active monthly subscriptions or remaining credit were still able to utilize the phone-calling features. However, all subscription renewals will cease on April 3rd.
Continued Access for Existing Credit
Microsoft intends to provide a Skype Dial Pad, accessible through both the Skype web interface and within the Teams application, for an extended duration.
According to Microsoft VP of Product, Amit Fulay, this support will continue “as long as users have credit and they’re using this functionality,” as reported to TechCrunch.
Teams Free and PSTN Services
While the business-oriented version of Teams does offer phone-calling capabilities, Fulay has confirmed that Teams Free will not support PSTN (public switched telephone network) services.
This decision is largely attributed to evolving consumer behaviors and trends.
“We’ve been looking at usage of telephony for a while on Skype, and patterns have changed, usage has changed, and this is a step towards that,” Fulay explained.
He further noted that the widespread availability of mobile data plans has altered the landscape since the original introduction of these telephony features.

System Migration from Skype to Teams

The Skype application will remain functional alongside Teams, operating concurrently until May 5, 2025.

“Our priority was ensuring a seamless transition where users wouldn’t experience any loss of contacts or cherished memories,” stated Fulay. “Preserving the history of shared content is paramount.”
Should users choose to migrate to Teams, their complete contact list and data will be fully restored.
Data Retention Policy
In the event a user does not actively take any steps before May 5, 2025, Skype will maintain user data until the conclusion of the year.
Following this period, all retained data will be permanently deleted.

However, Teper views this as less of a concern, citing the established versatility of other Microsoft products.
“We anticipate a significant number of users will migrate from Skype to Teams,” he stated. “Consider Word, Excel, and PowerPoint – these are brands successfully utilized in both business and personal contexts.
We already observe students completing assignments in Word and individuals managing finances in Excel, demonstrating a precedent for our tools being integrated into both professional and private lives.”
