AI Service Disruptions Possible Due to High Demand
During Microsoft’s earnings conference call on Wednesday, a company executive warned of potential interruptions to AI services. This is attributed to customer demand exceeding the rate at which the company can establish new data centers.
Capacity Constraints Anticipated
Amy Hood, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, indicated that AI capacity limitations could be experienced as soon as June. This was stated during the discussion of the company’s fiscal year 2025 third-quarter financial results.
“Initial projections anticipated a balance by the conclusion of Q4, however, increased demand throughout the quarter has altered this outlook,” Hood explained. “Consequently, we anticipate being slightly constrained as the year concludes.”
Data Center Lease Cancellations and Investment
The timing of Hood’s comments is noteworthy, given reports of Microsoft cancelling several data center leases earlier in the year.
A February memo from TD Cowen investment bank detailed lease cancellations totaling “a couple hundred megawatts,” equivalent to the capacity of two data centers. Subsequent reports have indicated further lease terminations in the following two months.
Microsoft maintains that these events are not directly connected. The company reaffirmed its commitment to investing $80 billion in data centers this year, as initially planned. Approximately half of this investment will be allocated to data centers located within the United States.
Demand Fluctuations and Long-Term Planning
Hood emphasized the dynamic nature of demand for AI services. Current demand levels differ from those projected for the future.
“It’s important to remember that decisions regarding data center infrastructure involve substantial lead times,” Hood stated. “From land acquisition to full operational status, the process can take five to seven years, or even two to three years.”
Therefore, Microsoft is continuously working to align its infrastructure development with evolving demand patterns.
Global Expansion of Data Center Infrastructure
Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO, announced at the beginning of the earnings call that the company had launched data centers in ten new countries and across four new continents during the most recent quarter.
This expansion demonstrates Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to meet the growing global demand for its AI services and cloud computing capabilities.
