Voi Raises $45M to Improve Micromobility Safety & End Sidewalk Riding

Voi Secures $45 Million for Micromobility Technology Advancement

Voi, a micromobility company, has successfully raised $45 million in a new funding round. These funds are earmarked for the advancement of technologies designed to enhance rider safety, prevent sidewalk riding, and ensure responsible scooter parking practices.

Investment Follows Successful Pilot Program

This investment arrives shortly after Voi initiated a pilot program in Northampton, U.K., in collaboration with Irish startup Luna. The aim of this trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of computer vision technology in addressing challenges related to scooter parking and unauthorized sidewalk usage.

The company intends to dedicate resources to “pioneering the application of computer vision software to deter riding on pavements,” as stated in a recent company announcement.

Exploring Computer Vision Integration

A Voi spokesperson communicated to TechCrunch that the company is actively pursuing leadership in this technological domain. They aim to integrate solutions, similar to those offered by Luna, across their entire fleet within the coming year.

Furthermore, Voi is considering extending the implementation of computer vision technology to its e-bikes as well.

Potential Acquisition and Next-Generation Scooters

The spokesperson also indicated Voi’s satisfaction with its current progress and its exploration of proprietary technology development. This includes the possibility of acquiring Luna.

While no definitive decisions have been made regarding acquisitions, Voi is simultaneously investing in the development of its next-generation scooter. It is conceivable that future models will feature integrated computer vision capabilities, rather than requiring retrofitting.

Expansion and City Partnerships

Currently operating in 70 cities throughout the U.K. and Europe, Voi is focused on expanding its reach. The company views technology that effectively addresses parking issues, enhances safety, and reduces sidewalk congestion as crucial for securing new city partnerships and maintaining existing ones.

Addressing Sidewalk Parking with Physical Racks

In addition to technological solutions, Voi is actively deploying physical parking racks to mitigate the problem of sidewalk parking. Recently, 100 parking racks were installed in Stockholm in partnership with the city government.

Voi already maintains over 300 physical parking racks within the U.K.

Sustainable Service and Battery System

Voi utilizes a swappable battery system, a common practice among operators like Lime and Spin. The parking racks are designed to keep scooters from obstructing public pathways. The company believes that providing physical racks will contribute to “creating a sustainable service for cities and their residents.”

Total Funding Reaches $205 Million

This latest funding round brings Voi’s total funding to $205 million. The round was spearheaded by The Raine Group, with participation from existing investors such as VNV Global, alongside contributions from new, currently unnamed, investors.
