Over the last two years, Micro1 has experienced significant expansion, positioning it among AI companies achieving rapid scaling. The startup, established three years ago, specializes in the recruitment and management of human experts for AI training data purposes. The company began the year with an approximate annual recurring revenue (ARR) of $7 million.

Surpassing Revenue Expectations

Currently, Micro1 reports exceeding $100 million in ARR, as stated by founder and CEO Ali Ansari in an interview with TechCrunch. This figure represents more than a doubling of the revenue reported in September, coinciding with the announcement of its $35 million Series A funding round and a $500 million valuation.

Demand for Human Data and Market Projections

Ansari, age 24, indicated that Micro1 collaborates with prominent AI labs, including Microsoft, and numerous Fortune 100 companies. These entities are actively working to enhance large language models through post-training and reinforcement learning techniques. The increasing demand for highly skilled human data is driving a rapidly growing market, which Ansari forecasts will expand from its current size of $10-15 billion to nearly $100 billion within the next two years.

Industry Shifts and Competitive Landscape

The growth of Micro1, alongside larger competitors like Mercor and Surge, was notably accelerated following reports that OpenAI and Google DeepMind severed ties with Scale AI. This occurred after Meta’s substantial $14 billion investment in Scale AI and the subsequent appointment of Scale’s CEO.

Comparing ARR with Competitors

While Micro1’s ARR is experiencing substantial growth, it currently remains below that of its primary competitors. Sources indicate that Mercor’s ARR exceeds $450 million, and Surge reportedly generated $1.2 billion in revenue during 2024.

Micro1’s Core Competency: Expert Recruitment

Ansari attributes Micro1’s success to its efficient ability to recruit and assess domain experts. Initially founded as an AI recruitment firm named Zara, focusing on matching engineering talent with software positions, the company transitioned into the data-training market. The platform now incorporates tools for interviewing and verifying the qualifications of applicants seeking expert roles.

Emerging Market Segments

Beyond providing expert-level data to leading AI labs, Ansari highlights two emerging segments poised to significantly impact the economics of human data.

AI Agents for Enterprise Workflows

The first involves Fortune 1000 companies that are not traditionally AI-focused, but are beginning to develop AI agents for internal processes, customer support, financial operations, and specialized industry applications.

The development of these agents necessitates systematic evaluation, including testing frontier models, assessing their outputs, selecting optimal solutions, refining them, and continuously validating their performance in real-world scenarios. Ansari emphasizes that this process heavily relies on human experts evaluating AI behavior at scale.

Robotics Pre-Training and Data Collection

The second emerging area is robotics pre-training, which requires high-quality, human-generated demonstrations of everyday physical tasks. Micro1 is currently constructing what Ansari describes as the world’s largest robotics pre-training dataset, gathering demonstrations from numerous individuals recording object interactions within their homes. He believes robotics companies will require substantial volumes of this data to enable their systems to operate reliably in residential and office environments.

Future Market Share and Budget Allocation

“We anticipate that a significant portion of product budgets within non-AI-native enterprises will be allocated to evaluations and human data, increasing from 0% to at least 25% of total product budgets,” stated the CEO, who launched Micro1 while attending UC Berkeley. “Our work in robotics data, alongside these other areas, will represent a substantial portion of that $100 billion annual market.”

Continued Focus on Elite AI Labs

Despite the emergence of new markets, Micro1’s current growth is still largely driven by its collaborations with leading AI labs and enterprises heavily invested in AI. The startup is expanding its work with these labs on reinforcement learning, a crucial feedback loop for testing and improving model performance.

Micro1’s strategic move into robotics data and enterprise agent development, coupled with its scaling of specialized reinforcement learning environments, aims to secure additional market share as competition in the data landscape intensifies.

Responsible Scaling and Expert Compensation

Currently, Ansari states the company is prioritizing responsible scaling, ensuring fair compensation for experts, and maintaining a human-centric approach within an industry focused on training machines.

The Micro1 Expert Network

The company presently manages thousands of experts across a wide range of disciplines, encompassing both highly technical fields and less conventional areas. Many of these experts earn approximately $100 per hour, according to Ansari.

“We have Harvard professors and Stanford PhDs dedicating half of their week to training AI through Micro1,” Ansari noted. “However, the more significant trend is the increasing volume and diversity of roles. The demand is expanding into areas not traditionally considered important for language model training, including offline and non-technical fields. We are optimistic about the future direction of this industry.”
