miami edtech startup nearpod acquired by renaissance

Nearpod Acquisition by Renaissance Holding Corp.
Nearpod, a Miami-based educational technology firm, is set to be acquired by Renaissance Holding Corp., a developer of educational technologies. A definitive agreement has been signed by both organizations, as confirmed by Todd Brekhus, Renaissance’s Chief Product Officer.
Initial reports regarding the potential deal surfaced on Yahoo! Finance, and were subsequently verified by a company source speaking with TechCrunch. Renaissance does not intend to publicly disclose the financial terms of the acquisition, even following its completion.
Nearpod’s Platform and Growth
Nearpod provides a K-12 edtech platform enabling teachers to construct interactive lessons. These lessons incorporate elements like videos, quizzes, and questions, fostering student engagement.
Students can participate in lessons using any device, with both real-time and student-paced learning modes available. The platform adapted to meet the demands of remote learning during the pandemic.
Founded in 2012 by three Argentinian entrepreneurs, Nearpod is currently under the leadership of Pep Carrera, who assumed the role in early 2020.
The company has secured over $30 million in venture capital funding, according to Crunchbase data.
Renaissance’s Strategic Interest
According to Brekhus, Renaissance identified Nearpod as a key component in enhancing their offerings. They sought to improve connectivity with lesson delivery and boost teacher engagement within the classroom.
“Nearpod has excelled in these areas,” Brekhus stated, highlighting the company’s exceptional performance.
Leadership and Future Operations
Pep Carrera and the existing Nearpod team will maintain their current roles and responsibilities. Carrera will now report directly to Chris Bauleke, CEO of Renaissance.
The focus will be on continuing Nearpod’s mission while integrating it with Renaissance’s broader objectives.
Nearpod’s Recent History and Pandemic Response
Carrera, who relocated to Miami in 2020 from Michigan to lead Nearpod, faced immediate challenges. His first day involved deciding to close the office due to the onset of the pandemic.
Currently, Nearpod employs approximately 290 individuals, primarily at its headquarters in Dania Beach.
While Carrera didn’t explicitly confirm being recruited for an eventual exit, he acknowledged the founders’ exploration of growth strategies to better serve teachers and students.
Explosive Growth in 2020
Under Carrera’s direction, Nearpod experienced significant growth in 2020, particularly in response to the shift towards remote learning.
The platform was successfully adapted for distance education, establishing Nearpod as a leader in K-12 online learning.
Widespread Adoption and User Base
Nearpod is utilized across all 50 U.S. states and in over 1,800 school districts.
In 2020, the company saw approximately 50% growth, with more than 1 million teachers utilizing the platform and 2-3 million students participating daily.
All generated revenue is being reinvested into the company to fuel further organic expansion, with minimal spending on traditional advertising. Word-of-mouth referrals are the primary driver of marketing success.
Pep Carrera’s Background
Prior to joining Nearpod, Carrera served as president of ProQuest Books, focusing on innovative software solutions for academic learners and librarians.
He also held the positions of president and COO at VitalSource Technologies, where he oversaw a tenfold increase in the company’s reach, serving over 20 million learners annually.
