Meta AI Research: Former Google DeepMind Director Appointed

Robert Fergus Appointed Head of Meta's FAIR Lab
Meta has selected Robert Fergus to assume leadership of its Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) laboratory, as reported by Bloomberg.
Fergus previously held the position of research director at Google DeepMind for approximately five years, as indicated on his LinkedIn profile.
Previous Experience
Before his tenure at Google, Fergus was employed as a researcher scientist at Meta itself.
Challenges and Transitions at FAIR
Meta’s FAIR, established in 2013, has encountered difficulties in recent times, a Fortune report suggests.
The lab was instrumental in the research and development of the company’s initial AI models, notably Llama 1 and Llama 2.
Researcher Departures
However, a significant number of researchers have reportedly left FAIR, seeking opportunities at other startups, competing companies, and even within Meta’s more recently formed GenAI division.
The GenAI group was responsible for the creation of Llama 4.
Leadership Change
Joelle Pineau, the former VP of AI Research at Meta, announced her departure in April to pursue a new career opportunity.
This appointment of Fergus follows Pineau’s exit and aims to revitalize the FAIR lab.
