Meta Tests AI-Generated Comments on Instagram

Meta Explores AI-Powered Comment Suggestions for Instagram
Meta has been actively integrating artificial intelligence into its suite of applications in recent times. This includes previous explorations into AI-driven characters, a project ultimately abandoned due to user feedback regarding their unsettling nature.
The company is now venturing into a new area of AI assistance: facilitating interactions on Instagram. Specifically, Meta intends to employ AI to help users compose comments on posts.
Discovery of the "Write with Meta AI" Feature
Jonah Manzano, an X user known for identifying emerging social media functionalities, recently discovered a “Write with Meta AI” prompt within Instagram. This feature aims to provide users with AI-generated comment suggestions.
According to a video shared by Manzano, users participating in the test will observe a pencil icon adjacent to the text input field beneath a post. Tapping this icon grants access to Meta AI.
The AI then analyzes the post’s image and generates three potential comment options. These suggestions are designed to be relevant to the visual content.
For instance, if a post depicts an individual smiling and giving a thumbs-up within a living room setting, Meta AI might propose comments such as “Cute living room setup,” “Love the cozy atmosphere,” or “Great photo shoot location.” Users can request additional suggestions by refreshing the options.
Meta's Statement and Broader AI Integration
A Meta spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the company routinely tests new features utilizing Meta AI across its applications.
The spokesperson indicated that, beyond direct messaging, Meta AI is being explored for integration into areas like comments, the main feed, groups, and search functionalities. The goal is to enhance user experiences by making them more engaging and practical.
While Meta has not disclosed details regarding the test feature’s availability, they did mention previous testing of AI-generated comments on Facebook last year.
Potential User Reaction and Concerns
This new feature may not be universally welcomed. Many users prefer maintaining an AI-free commenting environment on Instagram.
A significant concern is that friends deserve authentic, personalized comments rather than AI-generated responses. Some users express a desire for a return to Instagram’s earlier, more genuine atmosphere, where there was less emphasis on curated performance.
The introduction of AI-assisted comments could be perceived as inauthentic and unnecessary by those seeking genuine connection.
Future Rollout and Ongoing AI Experimentation
As with all test features, the timeline for a wider rollout remains uncertain. It is currently unknown whether Meta intends to implement this feature more broadly.
It is important to note that Meta has previously investigated different applications of AI within comments. Last year, the company tested AI-generated comment summaries on Facebook, demonstrating a continued interest in leveraging AI to enhance user interaction.
