Meta's Llama AI Model Surpasses 1.2 Billion Downloads

Meta announced in mid-March that its Llama family of “open” AI models had achieved 1 billion downloads. This represented a significant increase from the 650 million downloads reported at the beginning of December 2024.

During its first LlamaCon developer conference on Tuesday, Meta disclosed that this number has now risen to 1.2 billion downloads.

Developer Contributions and Model Derivatives

According to Meta’s chief product officer, Chris Cox, a substantial community of developers is actively contributing to the Llama ecosystem.

He stated that tens of thousands of derivative models are being created and downloaded hundreds of thousands of times each month.

Meta AI User Base Growth

The reach of Meta AI, the company’s AI assistant which is powered by Llama models, is also expanding rapidly.

Cox further revealed that Meta AI has now reached approximately one billion users.

Competitive Landscape

While the Llama ecosystem demonstrates impressive growth, Meta encounters strong competition within the artificial intelligence sector.

Notably, just prior to Meta’s announcement, Alibaba launched Qwen3, a new family of models that performs competitively on various AI benchmarks.

This highlights the dynamic and evolving nature of the AI landscape, with multiple companies vying for leadership.
