Meta Hires OpenAI Researchers: Recruiting Blitz Continues

Meta Gains Ground in AI Talent War, Secures OpenAI Researchers

The competition for leading artificial intelligence experts has seen a significant development, with Meta reportedly succeeding in recruiting three researchers from OpenAI. This occurred despite public criticism from OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, regarding Meta’s aggressive recruitment strategies.

OpenAI Zurich Founders Join Meta's Superintelligence Team

Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai, the individuals who initially established OpenAI’s research hub in Zurich, have now become part of Meta’s dedicated superintelligence team. This move, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, indicates the effectiveness of Mark Zuckerberg’s recruitment approach.

Altman had previously disclosed, during a podcast interview, that Zuckerberg has been offering compensation packages exceeding $100 million to attract key personnel from OpenAI. Further reporting by the WSJ revealed Zuckerberg’s direct engagement with numerous AI researchers via WhatsApp.

Zuckerberg's Direct Recruitment Efforts

Zuckerberg has been actively identifying potential recruits through a dedicated chat group, internally referred to as “Recruiting Party 🎉”. He then personally extends invitations to dinners held at his residences in Palo Alto and Lake Tahoe to further discussions.

The results of this strategy have been varied. A recent success involved securing Scale AI’s CEO, Alexandr Wang, following a $14 billion investment. This acquisition positioned Wang as one of the most expensive hires in the technology sector.

Challenges Remain in Attracting Top-Tier AI Talent

Despite these wins, Meta’s CEO has not been able to secure all desired recruits. The Wall Street Journal notes that OpenAI co-founders Ilya Sutskever and John Schulman remain unavailable, having both moved on to establish new ventures.

Altman expressed a degree of relief in the aforementioned podcast, stating: “I’m really happy that, at least so far, none of our best people have decided to accept [those offers].”
