Meta AR Glasses for Research Measure Heart Rate

Meta Announces Aria Gen 2 Augmented Reality Glasses
Meta has recently introduced the next iteration of its research-focused augmented reality eyewear, known as Project Aria: the Aria Gen 2.
Advancements Over the First Generation
The launch of Aria Gen 2 occurs approximately five years following the initial release of the first-generation Aria device. This new model incorporates enhanced functionalities into the platform.
Key improvements include a more advanced sensor array and the integration of Meta’s proprietary silicon.
New Sensor Capabilities
Aria Gen 2 is equipped with a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, enabling the measurement of the wearer’s heart rate.
Furthermore, a contact microphone has been added to effectively isolate the user’s voice from ambient sounds and the speech of others nearby.
Design and Performance
Weighing in at 75 grams, the Aria Gen 2 is capable of executing various artificial intelligence-driven tasks.
These tasks encompass eye tracking, hand tracking, and speech recognition.
The glasses feature open-ear speakers utilizing force-canceling technology, and the battery provides up to eight hours of operation on a single charge.
Availability and Initial Applications
Meta intends to distribute the glasses to academic institutions and commercial research laboratories in the near future.
Envision, an early adopter, is currently testing Aria Gen 2 to develop assistive technologies for individuals with visual impairments or low vision, as detailed in a Meta blog post.
This pilot program highlights the potential of the device to create innovative solutions for accessibility.
