Meta Llama AI Models API - Preview & Access

Meta Unveils Llama API for AI Model Access
During the first LlamaCon AI developer conference held on Tuesday, Meta officially announced the release of an API designed for its Llama series of AI models – the Llama API.
Currently available through a limited preview program, the Llama API empowers developers to investigate and experiment with applications driven by various Llama models, as stated by Meta. Combined with Meta’s Software Development Kits (SDKs), it facilitates the creation of Llama-powered services, tools, and applications.
Maintaining a Competitive Edge in Open Models
The introduction of this API is strategically timed as Meta aims to solidify its position within the highly competitive open model landscape. To date, Llama models have accumulated over a billion downloads, according to Meta’s reports.
However, competitors like DeepSeek and Alibaba’s Qwen are emerging as potential challengers, threatening Meta’s ambitions to establish a comprehensive ecosystem centered around Llama.
Features of the Llama API
The Llama API provides developers with the necessary tools to fine-tune and assess the performance of Llama models, beginning with Llama 3.3 8B. Users can generate datasets, conduct training, and subsequently utilize Meta’s evaluation suite within the Llama API to rigorously test the quality of their customized models.
Meta has affirmed that data from Llama API customers will not be utilized for training its own models. Furthermore, models developed using the Llama API are transferable to alternative hosting environments.
Model Serving Options and Partnerships
Specifically for developers constructing applications based on Meta’s recently launched Llama 4 models, the Llama API offers model-serving capabilities through collaborations with Cerebras and Groq. These “early experimental” options are accessible upon request, designed to aid developers in prototyping their AI applications, according to Meta.
Meta explained in a blog post shared with TechCrunch that by simply selecting the Cerebras or Groq model names within the API, developers can benefit from a simplified experience with unified usage tracking.
The company also expressed its intention to broaden partnerships with additional providers, aiming to offer an even wider range of options for building upon the Llama platform.
Future Access to the Llama API
Meta has announced plans to progressively expand access to the Llama API “in the coming weeks and months.”
