Meta to Utilize AI for Privacy and Harm Assessments

According to internal documentation accessed by NPR, Meta is preparing to implement an AI-driven system to assess potential harms and privacy concerns associated with a significant portion – up to 90% – of updates across its applications, including Instagram and WhatsApp.

FTC Agreement and Current Review Processes

A 2012 agreement between Facebook (now Meta) and the Federal Trade Commission mandates the company to perform privacy evaluations on its products. These evaluations are intended to identify risks inherent in any proposed updates.

Currently, these privacy reviews are predominantly carried out by human evaluators. This process ensures a thorough examination of potential issues before implementation.

The New AI-Powered System

Under the proposed system, product teams at Meta will be required to complete a questionnaire detailing their work. Following this, they will generally receive an “instant decision” generated by AI, highlighting identified risks.

This AI assessment will also outline the specific requirements that an update or new feature must satisfy prior to its release.

Potential Benefits and Concerns

The adoption of this AI-centric methodology is expected to accelerate Meta’s product update cycle. However, a former executive cautioned NPR that this shift also introduces “higher risks.”

The concern is that potential negative consequences stemming from product changes may be less effectively prevented before they impact users.

Meta’s Official Response

A Meta spokesperson stated that the company has “invested over $8 billion in our privacy program” and remains dedicated to both innovation and regulatory compliance.

“As risks evolve and our program matures, we enhance our processes to better identify risks, streamline decision-making, and improve people’s experience,” the spokesperson explained.

The company intends to use technology to ensure consistency and predictability in evaluating low-risk decisions. Human expertise will continue to be utilized for complex or novel issues requiring in-depth assessment and oversight.
