Meta AI App: A New ChatGPT Competitor

Meta Launches Stand-Alone AI Application
Following the integration of Meta AI across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, Meta is now releasing a dedicated, stand-alone AI application. This new app, revealed during Meta’s LlamaCon event on Tuesday, provides users with direct access to Meta AI, functioning similarly to the ChatGPT application and other AI assistant tools.
Leveraging Existing User Data
Meta aims to attract users by capitalizing on its unique advantage over competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic. The company already possesses extensive knowledge of user preferences, interests, and social connections, accumulated through years of data shared on platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
This existing data allows Meta’s AI app to offer a differentiated experience. It can utilize “[draw] on information you’ve already chosen to share on Meta products,” including user profiles and engagement history, to deliver personalized responses. Currently, these customized responses are available to users in the United States and Canada.
Personalized AI Interactions
Users have the ability to further personalize their interactions with Meta AI by providing additional information. For instance, a user can inform the AI about dietary restrictions, such as lactose intolerance. The AI will then retain this information and avoid recommending unsuitable activities, like a wine and cheese tasting, during future travel planning.
Data Usage Considerations
As with all AI-powered products, users should remain mindful of how Meta might utilize the data shared during chatbot interactions. Meta’s revenue is largely dependent on its targeted advertising business, which relies heavily on its vast collection of user data.
Introducing the Discover Feed
Meta’s AI app introduces a new “Discover” feed. This feature allows users to share their experiences and creative uses of AI with their friends. An example provided by Meta shows a user requesting the AI to describe them using three emojis, then sharing the result with their network.
User interactions with Meta AI will only be published to the Discover feed if the user explicitly chooses to share them. This ensures user privacy and control over their data.
Potential for Trend Amplification
The Discover feed has the potential to amplify emerging trends within the generative AI space. Recent examples include the popularity of creating AI-generated images resembling Barbie dolls or characters from Studio Ghibli films. However, not all applications require a social feed, as demonstrated by platforms like Venmo.
