Meta Restructures AI Organization - Again

Meta Restructures AI Division into Four Distinct Groups

Reports surfaced on Friday, via The Information, indicating Meta’s intention to dismantle its current AI organization and establish four new teams. This restructuring has now been formally implemented, confirmed by internal communications detailed in reports from Bloomberg and The New York Times.

The announcement of these changes was delivered by Alexandr Wang, founder of Scale AI, who assumed the role of Meta’s chief AI officer in June.

Introducing Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL)

Meta’s newly formed AI structure will operate under the name Meta Superintelligence Labs, or MSL. At the core of this new structure is a dedicated group known as TBD Labs.

TBD Labs will be spearheaded by Wang and will concentrate on the development of foundation models, including the Llama series, with its most recent iteration released in April.

Supporting Groups within MSL

In addition to TBD Labs, three further groups have been established to support Meta’s AI initiatives.

  • One group will be dedicated to advanced research.
  • Another will focus on the seamless integration of AI into Meta’s products.
  • The final group will concentrate on the necessary infrastructure to support these endeavors.

These changes reflect Meta’s commitment to strengthening its position in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Responding to Competitive Pressures

Meta has been actively investing in the overhaul of its AI organization in recent months. This response is driven by concerns regarding its competitive standing against companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind.

Mark Zuckerberg has been directly involved in the recruitment process for the new teams, as previously reported by Bloomberg in June.
