Meta, under the direction of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is demonstrating a significant sense of urgency in the development of its superintelligence technologies.

The company has been actively recruiting AI researchers, and Zuckerberg recently revealed plans for a substantial 5-gigawatt data center, named Hyperion.

Addressing Immediate Computing Needs

A clear sense of haste is evident in Meta’s actions. Reports from SemiAnalysis, corroborated by Business Insider, indicate that the company is prioritizing increased computing power to an extent that it is utilizing temporary data center structures.

These temporary facilities, consisting of erected tents, are being deployed while permanent construction is still underway.

Catching Up to the Competition

These developments signal Meta’s determination to rapidly expand its AI capabilities, particularly after falling behind key competitors such as OpenAI, xAI, and Google.

Zuckerberg appears unwilling to adhere to conventional construction schedules in order to bridge this competitive gap.

Hyperion Data Center Details

SemiAnalysis emphasized that the current design prioritizes speed over traditional considerations like aesthetics or redundancy.

The report highlights the use of prefabricated power and cooling modules, alongside lightweight structures, as evidence of this focus on rapid deployment.

Notably, the design lacks backup generation systems, such as diesel generators.

Location and Future Capacity

According to Meta spokesperson Ashley Gabriel, the Hyperion data center will be situated in Louisiana.

Initial projections suggest a capacity of 2 gigawatts by the year 2030.
