Meta Develops In-House AI Training Chip
Meta is currently evaluating a newly developed chip intended for the training of its artificial intelligence systems. This initiative represents a strategic move to lessen the company’s dependence on external hardware providers, such as Nvidia.
Partnership with TSMC
Reports from Reuters indicate that the chip, specifically engineered for AI-related tasks, was produced in collaboration with TSMC, a Taiwanese manufacturing company.
A limited rollout of the chip is underway, with plans for increased production contingent upon the success of these initial trials.
Previous Custom Chip Efforts
While Meta has previously utilized custom-designed AI chips, their application was limited to running AI models, not the more demanding process of training them.
It’s worth noting that several of the company’s prior chip design projects were either abandoned or significantly reduced in scope after failing to achieve desired performance levels.
Significant Investment and Potential Savings
Meta anticipates capital expenditures of $65 billion this year, with a substantial portion allocated to Nvidia GPUs.
Successfully transitioning to internally developed chips, even for a portion of its needs, could result in considerable cost savings for the social media corporation.
