Meta Pursues Acquisition of South Korean Chip Firm

Meta is currently exploring the possibility of acquiring a chip manufacturer based in South Korea. This potential acquisition is driven by the company’s need to strengthen its hardware infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI).

Potential Acquisition of FuriosaAI

Reports indicate that FuriosaAI, a chip startup established by former engineers from Samsung and AMD, is a prime target for acquisition by Meta. An announcement regarding Meta’s intentions could be made as early as this month, according to Forbes.

FuriosaAI specializes in the development of chips designed to accelerate the execution and deployment of AI models. These chips are particularly relevant for models like Meta’s Llama 2 and Llama 3, which are capable of generating text.

Funding and Existing Partnerships

To this point, FuriosaAI has secured 90 billion Korean won – approximately $61.94 million – in funding from various investors. Naver, a prominent South Korean technology company, is among those who have invested in FuriosaAI, as detailed by Crunchbase.

The company has also indicated that it is in discussions with prospective clients located in the United States, Japan, and India, though the identities of these clients remain undisclosed.

Strategic Implications for Meta

This move by Meta is strategically aimed at lessening its dependence on Nvidia, the current leader in the chipmaking industry. It also serves as a complement to Meta’s internal initiatives focused on creating its own efficient AI accelerator chips.

Meta has recently projected that it will invest up to $65 billion this year to support its expanding AI objectives. This substantial investment underscores the company’s commitment to advancing its AI capabilities.
