Meta Launches AI-Generated Video Feed, Vibes, in Europe

Meta has announced the European rollout of Vibes, its platform for short-form, AI-created videos, within the Meta AI application. This feature presents a continuously updated stream of videos entirely produced by artificial intelligence.

Vibes and the Competitive Landscape

The expansion to Europe follows a six-week period after the initial introduction of Vibes in the United States. Shortly after Meta’s launch, OpenAI introduced Sora, a platform designed for the creation and sharing of AI-generated video content.

Vibes allows users both to generate and share concise, AI-driven videos, alongside accessing a curated feed showcasing AI videos from other users. Meta indicates that the feed will adapt and become increasingly tailored to individual user preferences over time.

Content Creation and Sharing Options

Users can initiate video creation through text prompts or by modifying existing videos. The platform enables the addition of new visual elements, music integration, and stylistic adjustments to align with personal preferences.

“This represents a fundamentally social and collaborative creative process, encouraging remixing, co-creation, and the development of shared narratives with friends,” Meta explained in a recent blog post. “Videos and content can be directly shared to the Vibes feed, sent to contacts, or cross-posted to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.”

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, revealed the feed in September, prompting a predictable response from users in the comments section of his announcement. Many expressed skepticism about the need for an AI-generated alternative to platforms like TikTok.

Common sentiments included comments such as “nobody wants this” and “posting ai slop on his own app.” Another user simply questioned the purpose of the feature with, “What…?”

AI Content and Platform Policies

While Meta is embracing AI-generated content, other companies, like YouTube, are actively working to address the proliferation of low-quality AI content – often referred to as “AI slop.” This surge in AI-generated material has led to a noticeable increase in substandard content across social media.

The launch of Vibes is somewhat surprising, considering Meta previously emphasized the importance of “authentic storytelling” and discouraged “unoriginal” content earlier in the year. The company advised creators to prioritize content with genuine value.

Growth of AI Media Generation

Despite this prior messaging, Meta is now highlighting the growth of media generation within the Meta AI app, reporting a more than tenfold increase since its initial release. This suggests a growing user interest in experimenting with AI-powered creative tools.
