Previous Reviews and Current Version
We have offered a prior assessment of OmmWriter specifically for the Mac operating system. Since that initial review, the application has undergone updates and expanded to include versions compatible with both Windows and iPad devices.
This evaluation concentrates on the Dana I iteration of OmmWriter, as experienced within the Windows 7 environment. An upgrade path to Dana II is offered on a donation basis.
The Dana II version incorporates enhanced audio and visual elements, further refining the immersive writing experience.
Headphones are highly recommended to fully appreciate the application's calming atmosphere.
A Focused Writing Space
OmmWriter establishes a full-screen environment, immersing you in a calming background image and complementary ambient sounds. The interface centers around a dedicated text area, supported by a streamlined menu for essential functions.
Upon initiating your writing, subtle typing sounds are introduced, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere and promoting concentration.
Immersive Writing Experience
With continued use, the sidebar and menu-containing text box gradually fade away. This leaves you with a pristine canvas solely for your composition.
This minimalist approach is particularly beneficial for fostering creativity and uninterrupted thought.
The surrounding interface elements reappear when the mouse is moved, offering convenient access to controls when needed.
Application Control
OmmWriter can be minimized or closed through options located in the upper-right corner of the right-hand sidebar.
Minimizing the application instantly silences the ambient music, swiftly returning you to your desktop environment.
This provides a clear demarcation between the focused writing space and the broader digital world.
Features
OmmWriter’s primary design philosophy centers around minimalism, offering a nearly feature-free experience. However, several options are available to enhance usability. Let's explore these functionalities.
The application’s menu comprises six distinct sections: font selection, font size adjustment, background image customization, music control, typing sound effects, and document management. Each section presents a limited, yet purposeful, set of choices. Specifically, users can select from four fonts, four font sizes, three background images, and choose between three music loops or disable audio entirely.
Similarly, three typing sound options are provided, alongside the ability to mute them. Documents can be saved, saved as, or opened in either .omm or .txt format.
A word count is also displayed prominently in the bottom center of the text editing area.
The text field itself is resizable, allowing users to adjust its dimensions to their preference. As the text content grows beyond the visible area, a scrollbar appears on the right side for easy navigation.
Furthermore, a traditional Windows menu is accessible by hovering the mouse cursor at the top of the screen. This menu reveals additional features, including PDF export, the creation of new documents, text search functionality, and text transformation options.
The structure of this hidden menu is detailed below, providing access to a broader range of capabilities within the streamlined OmmWriter environment.
Desired Enhancements
A degree of customization regarding the background and audio elements is something I find lacking. Specifically, the ability to personalize these aspects would be a welcome addition.
When utilizing a darker background image, the option to select a more visible font color would significantly improve readability.
PDF Export Functionality
The utility of the PDF export feature could be greatly enhanced through the inclusion of further formatting capabilities.
Currently, the ability to adjust font size exclusively for highlighted text, or to apply styles such as bolding, underlining, or italics to such text, is absent.
Without these formatting options, the value proposition of exporting documents to PDF is diminished. The current functionality feels incomplete.
However, it’s important to acknowledge that introducing additional features could potentially detract from the application’s current streamlined and uncomplicated user experience. Perhaps its present simplicity is, in itself, a strength.

- Improved font contrast with darker backgrounds is needed.
