Beta Hatch Raises $10M for Mealworm Farming Innovation

Alternative Protein: Beta Hatch Secures $10 Million Funding

During a recent visit to Hong Kong, I was presented with mealworms by a startup as a novel snack. The texture was notably crisp, and their appearance was, predictably, somewhat unusual for baked larvae.

However, the flavor profile was rather mild, suggesting that supplemental seasoning might be beneficial.

Growing Interest in Sustainable Protein Sources

Driven by various sustainability concerns, alternative protein sources have garnered significant attention for both human and animal consumption.

Beta Hatch is concentrating its agricultural efforts on the animal feed market, specifically targeting livestock and pets.

Their farming process is described as generating “virtually zero-waste.”

$10 Million Investment for Expansion

The St. Louis-based company announced today a $10 million funding round.

Lewis & Clark AgriFood led the investment, with continued participation from existing investors Cavallo Ventures and Innova Memphis.

This capital injection will facilitate the expansion of Beta Hatch’s primary farm, located in Cashmere, Washington.

Commitment to Rural Communities

Founder and CEO Virginia Emery stated, “We are proud to contribute to the evolution of farming within the Washington agricultural landscape.”

She further expressed enthusiasm for expanding the company’s footprint in rural America, emphasizing job creation and partnerships with local communities to address global food demands.

Scaling Production Capacity

The expanded facility is projected to become the largest of its kind in North America.

This expansion is anticipated to increase Beta Hatch’s production capacity tenfold within the coming year.

Notably, the facility currently operates utilizing energy sourced from renewable resources.

Mealworms as a Viable Feed Ingredient

The potential of mealworms as a feed source is underscored by Ÿnsect’s substantial $125 million funding round in 2019.

This demonstrates a growing recognition of the value of insect-based protein in the agricultural sector.
