Mobile Cannabis Dispensaries in California | Meadow

Cannable Reduces Delivery Times to 20 Minutes with Meadow’s Dynamic Delivery
Cannable has significantly reduced its cannabis delivery times, shrinking them from hours to just 20 minutes, thanks to the implementation of Meadow’s new Dynamic Delivery system. This innovative approach utilizes delivery vehicles stocked with available products.
Customers can now place orders directly from these mobile dispensaries via an app, much like ordering from a modern ice cream truck. However, instead of frozen treats, these vehicles offer cannabis products like Gelato and Creamsicle strains.
Streamlined Inventory and Ordering
David Tuel, Director of Strategy & Technology at Cannable in Parlier, California, explained that the system allows for inventory to be stored directly within the vehicles. This eliminates the need for a centralized e-commerce location.
Customers order based on the vehicle’s current location and available stock, though they still have the option to order from the main dispensary menu as well.
How Dynamic Delivery Works
Meadow’s Dynamic Delivery provides dispensaries with a comprehensive toolkit for operating mobile retail locations. It consolidates the various tools needed for these services into a single solution.
Key features include automated driver dispatch, real-time inventory reporting, and geo-targeted SMS marketing for precise advertising.
Meadow’s Evolution and the Growth of Weed Delivery
Meadow, previously likened to the Amazon of cannabis, has expanded its platform with Dynamic Delivery. The company’s platform, similar to AWS, already serves a substantial portion of the cannabis retail sector.
Weed delivery is experiencing rapid growth, with 60% of retail cannabis transactions occurring via delivery in 2021, a rise from 50% in 2020, as reported by Weedmaps. Delivery among Gen Z consumers has increased by 125% year-over-year.
Addressing the “Hub and Spoke” Model’s Limitations
Traditionally, dispensaries have operated delivery services like mail carriers, receiving orders and then dispatching them from a central location. This “hub and spoke” method, while reliable and cost-effective, is often slow and frustrating for both businesses and customers.
Untapped Market Potential in California
Despite legalizing recreational marijuana in 2016, cannabis is only accessible in 35% of California. The remaining 65% lack access due to regulatory hurdles or local prohibitions.
A 2020 court ruling in Fresno affirmed the right to deliver to these underserved areas, dismissing a lawsuit by 24 California cities attempting to ban deliveries.
Benefits of Mobile Dispensaries
Mobile dispensaries offer significant advantages, including drastically reduced delivery times and innovative retail opportunities. Strict regulations are in place, but the benefits are substantial.
David Hua, Meadow co-founder, envisions mobile dispensaries at events like baseball games, utilizing geofencing to offer delivery within a specific area.
The platform tracks inventory, processes payments, and ensures compliance with Metrc, the cannabis regulatory system.
Operational Flexibility and Scalability
Operators can establish mobile dispensaries anywhere in California with just a vehicle, a driver, and a few clicks, even in areas without traditional brick-and-mortar stores.
Hua suggests scenarios like setting up kiosks at farmer’s markets or utilizing designated drop zones in parks like Golden Gate Park, particularly during events like the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival.
California Regulations and Inventory Limits
California law permits operators to carry up to $3,000 worth of inventory in a vehicle, increasing to $5,000 with pre-orders. Legislative efforts are underway to raise these limits to $10,000 - $25,000, which would further enhance the value of Meadow’s solution.
Addressing the Challenges of Mobile Operations
While California law allows mobile services, operating them effectively often requires multiple platforms. This can lead to administrative complexities, reliance on manual processes, and potential errors.
Hua highlights potential issues like drivers exceeding legal inventory limits due to human error and inaccuracies in online menus leading to customer service issues.
Dynamic Delivery’s Key Features
Meadow’s Dynamic Delivery streamlines operations by automatically dispatching orders to the nearest driver within a designated zone. This significantly reduces labor requirements.
The platform allows operators to define regions for each delivery vehicle, effectively turning each van into its own inventory hub.
Targeted Marketing and Customer Engagement
Operators can leverage the platform to send notifications to past customers when a driver is in their area, offering exclusive discounts and promotions.
Hua emphasizes this feature as a powerful marketing tool for reaching customers working remotely, particularly in urban areas like San Francisco.
Development and Expansion Plans
Meadow began developing these features during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic as delivery became increasingly crucial. The company continued building out the platform throughout 2021.
The initial launch of Dynamic Delivery is focused on California, with plans to expand to Michigan, Massachusetts, and New York in the future.
