Artemis-3 Mission Now Targeting 2025

During a briefing held on Tuesday, NASA representatives announced revisions to the Artemis program timeline. The program, designed to return American astronauts to the lunar surface after a decades-long hiatus, will see both the Artemis-2 and Artemis-3 missions delayed by a minimum of one year.

A significant factor contributing to the schedule adjustments, as highlighted by NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, is the ongoing dispute initiated by Blue Origin. This protest concerns the awarding of the Human Landing System (HLS) contract, which is crucial for the final descent to the moon’s surface.

The HLS contract was exclusively granted to SpaceX in April, prompting Blue Origin to formally challenge the decision. Nelson stated that the agency experienced a loss of “almost seven months” due to the legal proceedings surrounding this contract.

He also acknowledged the efforts of NASA’s legal counsel and the attorneys from the Department of Justice involved in the case.

Nelson emphasized the growing capabilities of China’s space program, specifically their progress towards lunar landings with taikonauts. He affirmed NASA’s commitment to pursuing a lunar presence in a secure and technically sound manner, aiming to surpass international competition.

NASA intends to be assertive in its efforts to achieve this goal.

SpaceX Executes Crew-3 Launch, Rocket Lab Postpones Liftoff

SpaceX continues to accumulate significant expertise in the realm of crewed space missions. Following the return of four astronauts from the International Space Station (ISS) on Monday evening – designated as “Crew-2” – the company swiftly dispatched a new team of four (“Crew-3”) to take their place at the orbital outpost just 48 hours later.

The Crew-3 mission operates within the framework of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program (CCP). This program represents a collaborative effort between the space agency and private sector companies, focused on the development and implementation of human space transportation systems.

SpaceX initiated its transportation services to and from the ISS under the CCP in 2020. This undertaking is supported by a $3.1 billion contract encompassing six missions.

Boeing also received a $4.8 billion contract through the same program for its Starliner capsule; however, a series of technical challenges have delayed its operational debut, with a projected launch no earlier than the first six months of the coming year.

Concurrently, Rocket Lab – the sole competitor to SpaceX in achieving first-stage rocket reusability – experienced a postponement of its scheduled Wednesday launch. The new launch date is set for no sooner than November 16th.

Rocket Lab communicated via Twitter that the delay was a precautionary measure. The reason cited was an anomalous reading from a ground-based sensor, coupled with the need for additional preparation time for helicopter recovery operations.

BlackSky has secured a contract with NASA, spanning five years, to deliver satellite imagery. This imagery will be utilized to bolster the agency's research efforts concerning Earth observation.

The company’s financial performance for the most recent quarter showed revenues reaching $7.9 million, representing a 49% increase compared to the same period last year. However, they reported an EBIDTA loss of $16.2 million, while maintaining a balance sheet of $198 million.

Global Launch Industry Insights

Bryce Tech’s latest quarterly report provides analysis of the global launch industry. Key findings indicate that China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation led in the number of orbital launches last quarter, achieving a total of 15.

Arianespace secured the second position, while SpaceX followed in third place. Interestingly, Arianespace was responsible for launching the highest number of individual spacecraft during the same period.

HawkEye 360, specializing in radio frequency satellite data, has successfully raised $145 million in a Series D funding round. This capital injection will facilitate the expansion of their satellite constellation.

The company’s objective is to increase the number of satellites in its constellation from the current nine to a total of 30 by mid-2023, enhancing its data collection capabilities.

Innovative Orbital Deployment

Spaceflight Inc., a provider of launch services, is pioneering a new approach to spacecraft deployment. They will utilize one of their Sherpa orbital transfer vehicles to deliver customer spacecraft to two separate orbits simultaneously.

The Sherpa-LTC1, an electric propulsion space tug, will undertake this complex maneuver following its launch aboard SpaceX’s Transporter 3 mission in January 2022.

A Novel Launch System

SpinLaunch, a startup employing a unique launch methodology, has successfully completed its initial test of a subscale prototype of its kinetic launch system. This system utilizes a large, vacuum-sealed chamber and a hypersonic tether.

The spacecraft is spun at extremely high velocities – potentially reaching 5,000 miles per hour – to achieve atmospheric escape. This innovative approach eliminates the need for traditional rockets and rocket engines.
