Automatically Delete Old Downloads | System Cleanup

Automating Download Folder Cleanup
Do you find your download folder frequently becomes overwhelmed with files you no longer recognize? While manually deleting these files is an option, a more efficient approach involves configuring your computer to handle the cleanup process automatically.
For this purpose, we will utilize a lightweight freeware program called Belvedere. This tool enables you to move or delete files based on personalized rules that are easily established within its user interface.
To maximize the benefits of automated maintenance, consider also scheduling the highly regarded system optimization application, CCleaner, to run nightly.
Using Belvedere
After obtaining the executable file and storing it in a secure location, simply launch it to begin (installation is not required). To ensure the application starts automatically upon login, create a shortcut within the shell:startup folder.
Initially, click the plus symbol located in the bottom left corner to add a new folder for monitoring.
A "Browser For Folder" dialog will then appear, prompting you to select the desired folder.
Once the folder is added, select it from the list on the left-hand side.
Next, click the plus symbol below the Rules box to create a new rule, assigning it a descriptive name such as "Cleanup Old Downloads". The interface allows for the creation of multiple conditions to identify files.
Since our goal is to remove outdated downloads, choose "Date last opened" and "is not in the last" x "days". This condition is straightforward to understand.
It is generally advisable to send files to the recycle bin instead of permanently deleting them. You can further refine the filter by adding another rule using the plus icon.
Specify "Extension" and "matches one of", then enter your desired file extensions, separated by commas (omit the periods).
The "Test" button will display a preview of the files that will be affected, helping you avoid unintended consequences.
After configuring the rule, you can establish additional rules to manage different file types. For example, a rule can be created to move all downloaded images to your Pictures folder.
Once all rules are defined, minimize the application to the system tray. It will then operate silently in the background, maintaining your system's cleanliness.
While not flawless and containing some minor imperfections (hence the recommendation to use the recycle bin option), Belvedere is a valuable tool for keeping your system organized. You can download Belvedere from lifehacker.com.
