Transparent Gnome Terminal on Ubuntu - How To

Achieving Transparency in the Gnome Terminal

The Gnome terminal application includes a feature allowing for a transparent-like background effect. While not genuine transparency, it effectively displays the underlying background image. This creates a visually appealing effect for users.

Enabling the Transparent Background

To activate this feature, begin by opening a terminal window. Navigate to the Edit menu, then select 'Current Profile'.

Within the profile settings, click on the 'Effects' tab. Locate and check the 'Transparent background' radio button.

A slider is provided to adjust the level of transparency. Moving the slider fully to the left results in a completely transparent background.

Edit Profile Transparency

The background can be adjusted to a partially shaded state, as demonstrated in the image above.

The effect is most noticeable and beneficial when utilizing either a very dark or a very light desktop background.

Benefits of a Transparent Terminal

  • Enhanced Visuals: Creates a more modern and aesthetically pleasing terminal appearance.
  • Improved Background Visibility: Allows the underlying desktop wallpaper to be visible.
  • Customization: Offers a degree of personalization for the terminal environment.

By adjusting the transparency level, users can achieve a balance between readability and visual appeal within the Gnome terminal.
