Vista Folder Icons: Customize with Green Icons

Customizing Folder Icons in Vista

Have you observed a visual inconsistency when creating new folders within your Home directory in Vista? The standard folders often feature attractive greenish icons, while newly created folders appear with a less appealing yellow icon.

Fortunately, resolving this is a straightforward process. It simply requires identifying the location of the desired icons.

Changing Folder Icon to Match

A key benefit of this technique is that no downloads are necessary. Begin by right-clicking on the folder you wish to modify and selecting 'Properties'.

Navigate to the 'Customize' tab and then click the 'Change Icon' button.

Instead of utilizing the default 'shell32.dll' file, specify 'imageres.dll' as the source for the icons. You can either paste the complete path or locate the file using the 'Browse' button.

%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll

After updating the text field, press Enter to refresh the icon list. Scroll to the right to discover an empty green folder icon that seamlessly matches the existing style.

The result is visually consistent folders.

You are free to select any other icon from the file if desired. The 'Restore Defaults' button allows you to revert to the original yellow folder appearance if you choose.
