Prior to its scheduled widespread release later in the year, Magic Leap has granted select healthcare organizations preliminary access to its next-generation augmented reality headset.

Several firms are already exploring the device’s capabilities. SentiAR, for example, provides software enabling surgeons to visualize a three-dimensional representation of a patient’s heart during surgical procedures.

Brainlab is also preparing to deploy its Mixed Reality Viewer software on the Magic Leap 2 platform.

Strategic Focus on Healthcare

This prioritization of digital healthcare startups for early access aligns with statements made by Magic Leap CEO Peggy Johnson last April.

Johnson indicated that augmented reality has the potential to revolutionize healthcare to a greater extent than any other sector in the immediate future.

She also emphasized the company’s initial focus on serving enterprise-level clients.

A History of Challenges

Magic Leap’s journey has been marked by significant hurdles since its initial rise as a prominent Silicon Valley startup.

Reports in 2019 revealed that sales of the $2,300 Magic Leap One Creator Edition headset reached only approximately 6,000 units within its first six months of availability.

Following this, the company underwent a period of workforce reductions.

A subsequent $350 million investment provided a renewed opportunity for growth and development.
