Louisiana Attorney General Sues Roblox Over Child Safety Concerns

The Attorney General of Louisiana has initiated legal action against Roblox, alleging a failure to establish fundamental safety measures. The platform is accused of creating an environment conducive to exploitation, described as an ideal location for those who prey on children.

Allegations of Facilitating Exploitation

Filed on Thursday by Attorney General Liz Murrill, the lawsuit contends that Roblox “continues to facilitate the dissemination of child sexual abuse material and the sexual exploitation of children residing in Louisiana.” Furthermore, the platform is accused of deliberately delaying the implementation of essential safety controls designed to shield children from predators and neglecting to inform parents about potential dangers.

Launched in 2006, Roblox currently boasts 82 million daily active users. The lawsuit highlights that a significant portion of this user base – 20% – is under the age of eight. An additional 20% falls within the 9 to 12 age bracket.

Prioritizing Profit Over Safety

“Roblox’s insufficient safety protocols place the children of Louisiana at risk,” stated Murrill. “The platform is rife with harmful content and predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue generation, and profits above the safety of children. Parents must be fully aware of the significant and immediate threat Roblox poses to their children to prevent potential tragedies.”

The legal complaint asserts that adults are able to misrepresent themselves as children on Roblox, and that children can circumvent age verification processes to access content intended for mature audiences.

Examples of Inappropriate Content

The lawsuit specifically cites several experiences available on the platform that contain sexually suggestive material. These include “Escape to Epstein Island,” “Diddy Party,” and “Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe.”

Roblox's Response

A Roblox spokesperson indicated that the company is unable to provide comment on ongoing litigation. However, they affirmed the platform’s commitment to dedicating “substantial resources, including cutting-edge technology and round-the-clock human moderation, to detect and prevent inappropriate content and behavior.” This includes efforts to prevent users from being directed to external platforms with potentially weaker safety standards.

“While no system is foolproof, Roblox has implemented robust technological safeguards and enforcement measures, including restrictions on the sharing of personal information, links, and direct image sharing between users,” the spokesperson added. “The safety of our community remains a paramount concern.”

Recent Safety Measures and Their Adequacy

Last year, Roblox introduced several new safety features aimed at protecting children, including a restriction preventing users under 13 from sending direct messages. These changes were implemented in response to reports highlighting the exposure of young users to risks such as grooming and explicit content.

However, Murrill’s lawsuit argues that these recent safety measures were introduced too late and are ultimately insufficient to address the existing dangers.

Legal Remedies Sought

The lawsuit requests a permanent injunction, preventing Roblox from asserting that it possesses adequate safety features. It also seeks to prohibit any actions that would violate the Louisiana Unfair Trade Practices Act.
