Loon Balloon Sets New Flight Record: 312 Days Aloft

Loon, a division of Alphabet dedicated to developing innovative networking solutions through high-altitude platforms, has achieved a new milestone in sustained stratospheric flight. A Loon balloon successfully remained airborne for 312 consecutive days, significantly surpassing the previous record of 223 days – a duration approaching a full year in the stratosphere.

This particular balloon was launched from Puerto Rico in May 2019. Its journey included a three-month service trial in Peru, followed by a southward trajectory across the Pacific Ocean, concluding with a landing in Baja, Mexico, in March of this year. According to Sal Candido, Loon’s Chief Technology Officer, this record-breaking flight demonstrates the company’s ongoing commitment to technological advancement and the continuous refinement of both its hardware and software systems.

A key aspect of this progress involves thorough analysis of record-setting balloons. Candido highlights Loon’s distinct advantage over conventional high-altitude balloons used for meteorological purposes: Loon recovers the vast majority of its balloons, enabling detailed examination of the highest-performing units. This capability allows the company to identify and reproduce the factors contributing to extended flight durations.

The ability to maintain stratospheric balloons for extended periods is beneficial because it allows Loon to deliver connectivity to designated regions for longer durations and at reduced expenses. This, in turn, has the potential to make communication services more accessible and affordable, particularly for individuals in remote or challenging terrains where establishing traditional ground-based infrastructure is cost-prohibitive.

While there are further possibilities for applications in scientific research, Earth observation, and weather forecasting, Loon’s primary focus remains on providing connectivity. Successfully repeating this achievement will be instrumental in furthering that objective.
