Locket App Gains Popularity with Gen Alpha Through New Feature

Locket, a social networking application designed for close friends, has experienced a surge in engagement among Gen Alpha users following the introduction of its latest feature, Rollcall.

Leveraging Apple’s Ecosystem for Social Connection

The app initially achieved prominence in early 2022 by creatively utilizing Apple’s widget system as the foundation for its social network. Instead of traditional push notifications, Locket’s widget dynamically updates to display photos recently shared by friends.

This innovative approach encourages users to return to the app and contribute their own photos, fostering a cycle of engagement.

Rollcall and the Power of Live Activities

Locket’s CEO, Matt Moss, explains that the Rollcall feature mirrors this strategy by integrating Apple platform capabilities into the social experience. Moss, an alumnus of the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) student scholarship program, recognizes the potential of novel formats to attract and retain users.

Rollcall prompts users to share their favorite photos from the previous week, capitalizing on iOS’s Live Activities feature. Introduced with iOS 18, Live Activities provide frequent updates in easily visible locations like the iPhone Lock Screen and Dynamic Island.

Beyond Real-Time Information: Creative Uses of Live Activities

While Apple initially intended Live Activities for real-time updates – such as ride-sharing or delivery information – developers have explored diverse applications. Examples include virtual pets within the Dynamic Island and real-time song lyrics displayed on the Lock Screen.

For Locket, Live Activities effectively serve as a contemporary alternative to push notifications.

How Rollcall Works

“Each Sunday, your Lock Screen will be taken over by a Live Activity, providing a prominent notification on your iPhone’s homepage,” Moss stated. “Similar to the widget, it leverages Apple technology to increase visibility and encourage sharing of moments that might otherwise go unshared.”

Significant User Engagement and Growth

The implementation of this technology has already yielded positive results for Locket, which has amassed over 91 million lifetime installs across iOS and Android, according to Appfigures estimates.

In its first week, Rollcall generated over a million shares within the app.

Furthermore, Moss reported that more than 25% of the app’s active users now participate in Rollcall on a weekly basis.

“The Live Activity significantly increases user engagement,” Moss noted. “It’s also enjoyable, as users feel a sense of collective participation as their friends share their photos.”

Gen Alpha as the Primary User Base

Approximately 80% of Rollcall’s initial active users belong to Gen Alpha.

The founder highlighted distinctions in how Gen Alpha and Gen Z utilize Locket.

“The key difference lies in its role as a companion versus a primary platform. We now have a substantial number of users for whom Locket is their main means of connecting with friends, directly sharing photos with a select group of close contacts,” Moss explained.

Future Developments and Monetization

Following the successful launch of Rollcall, Locket is exploring its potential as a foundation for additional features beyond still images.

Video support is a logical next step, but the company is also considering incorporating elements like music, favorite locations, and prompts to facilitate memory recall.

AI Integration – A Considered Approach

While Locket has no immediate plans to integrate AI-generated content like Sora or Meta AI, the company is evaluating how AI could enhance existing features, such as creating collages or assembling photo memories.

“Despite the attention garnered by AI applications, there remains a fundamental need for genuine connection with real people,” Moss emphasized. “This demand will persist, and Locket aims to fulfill it.”

Bridging the Gap Between Virtual and Real-World Connections

The company is also focused on translating virtual interactions within Locket into tangible real-world connections, potentially through reminders to call or text friends.

“Our priority is to leverage technology to genuinely help people connect, rather than simply providing a fleeting entertainment experience,” Moss said. “This focus on authentic relationships could be a significant long-term advantage.”

Financial Stability and Subscription Model

Locket currently operates on a subscription model and reports having over 100,000 subscribers. The 15-person company has been profitable since the previous year.
