Minimize Window Security: Prevent Peeking - Tech Tip

Protecting Your Minimized Windows with LockThis!

Have you ever allowed temporary access to your computer, only to worry about someone inadvertently opening your minimized windows? A free utility, LockThis!, offers a solution to secure these windows from unwanted access. Consider this situation: you are engaged in sensitive work on your computer, and a colleague requires brief use of the machine.

You likely minimize your active documents, but the possibility remains that someone might open them and view confidential information. This is where LockThis! proves valuable. It enables you to lock your applications by simply holding down the Ctrl key while minimizing the window.

Initial Setup and Password Configuration

Following the installation of LockThis!, it is advisable to immediately modify the default password. To do so, right-click the lock icon located in the system tray and select "Admin Panel."

The first time you access the Admin Panel, you will be prompted for the default password, which is “LockThis!” (without the quotation marks).

Within the Admin Panel, you can then change the Password to a more secure option.

You will be asked to re-enter the default password, “LockThis!” (again, without quotes), and click "Ok."

Next, input your desired new password twice for confirmation.

Please note that the changes will not take effect until you close the Admin Panel.

Using LockThis! to Secure Your Applications

To lock and minimize a window, hold down the Ctrl key and click the Minimize button.

As the application minimizes to the system tray, you will briefly observe the LockThis! icon appearing on your Desktop.

Compatibility Considerations

It’s important to be aware of certain limitations when using this application. LockThis! is not compatible with any version of Firefox. Furthermore, it may cease to function correctly within Internet Explorer 8.

During testing, the utility performed as expected with Opera, Chrome, and Safari. If you need to secure windows containing sensitive content viewed in a browser, utilizing one of these alternatives is recommended.

Conclusion

LockThis! presents a useful solution in scenarios where the standard “Win+L” lock function is not practical. While not without its limitations, this tool offers a creative approach to safeguarding your minimized windows from unauthorized viewing.

Download LockThis! and enhance your computer's security.
