Locast Suspends Local TV Streaming Service - Court Ruling

Locast Streaming Service Shuts Down Operations
The local television streaming platform, Locast, has ceased functioning, at least temporarily. This action follows a recent judicial decision that invalidated its use of non-profit status as a defense against legal challenges.
Broadcasting networks asserted that Locast was infringing upon their copyright protections.
Service Suspension Announcement
Locast communicated the suspension of services to its user base via email. The message stated, “Operations are being suspended, effective immediately.”
The company maintained that its structure was intentionally designed to fully comply with legal requirements. However, in light of the court’s judgments – with which Locast respectfully disagrees – operations have been halted.
Concerns Regarding User Fees
The court also raised concerns about the $5 monthly fees collected from subscribers. These payments were presented as covering operational expenses.
The judge determined that Locast was utilizing these funds for market expansion, generating revenue significantly exceeding necessary costs. It was found that the income derived from user charges was disproportionate to actual expenditures.
