Learn A Foreign Language - Busuu

The Benefits of Language Acquisition and an In-Depth Look at Busuu
The process of acquiring a new language can present challenges, however, selecting an appropriate language and dedicating sufficient time to study can yield significant rewards. The decision of which second, or even third, language to learn is a multifaceted one, ultimately dependent on individual preferences.
Motivations for language learning are diverse. Some individuals may aspire to relocate to a different country, while others might be seeking to expand their professional horizons.
Regardless of the underlying reason, once a language has been chosen, consistent effort and dedication are essential for progress.
Exploring Language Learning Resources
Previously, we have reviewed a variety of language learning platforms, including the highly regarded LiveMocha, alongside 18 other effective websites for language study.
Our coverage has also included Busuu in the past, but this review will provide a more comprehensive examination of both the website and its associated Android application.
This detailed analysis will focus on the features and functionality of Busuu, enabling learners to utilize the platform effectively for language acquisition while benefiting from the convenience of mobile learning.
The Busuu platform offers a flexible approach to language learning, catering to individuals who prefer studying on a computer or while on the move with their Android devices.
An Overview of the Busuu Platform
Busuu provides learning options through both complimentary and premium subscriptions. While the premium plans can be relatively costly – priced at $18 monthly, decreasing to $6.29 per month with a two-year commitment – this assessment will focus exclusively on the features accessible within the free version of the site.

The free tier grants access to writing and reading exercises, interactive assessments, and video chat functionality. For the purpose of demonstration, German has been selected as the target language. Upon initial setup, users are prompted to establish a completion date for the course, utilizing a slider to define their desired level of dedication.

Following goal setting, a clearly defined curriculum – referred to as an “itinerary” by Busuu – is presented, outlining the learning pathway.

Initiating the learning process is as simple as clicking the prominent “Go” button. A typical vocabulary lesson is structured as follows:

Each visual element represents a phrase, which is subsequently presented with accompanying audio during the overview stage. For instance, the phrase “Good afternoon” in German is displayed.

The audio quality is remarkably clear and crisp. After mastering the foundational vocabulary of a lesson, a dialogue is introduced.

The complete dialogue is available for listening, and its translation can be revealed on the opposite side – a particularly valuable feature, especially for beginners. A minor inconvenience is the misalignment of the translation with the original language, as illustrated above. This could be readily addressed to enhance comprehension for learners following along with the dialogue in both languages.
A subsequent quiz assesses understanding of the dialogue. Importantly, both the questions and answer choices are presented in the target language, with tooltips providing English translations (at least for this user).

The platform then encourages users to introduce themselves to the community by composing a short self-introduction in the target language. This is not intended to be an extensive autobiography, but rather a simple greeting such as “Hi, my name is…”. Images at the bottom of the screen serve as prompts, recalling useful phrases for self-introduction included in the lesson.

Upon submitting the written text, users can select up to five Busuu members to review it and provide feedback. Submitting your work also triggers a reciprocal task: you will receive a phrase from another user to correct in your native language. Feedback on the introductory text was received within five minutes, with the encouraging message “Sehr gut, weiter so!!!” (meaning “Very good, keep it up!”). The profile of the feedback provider is also visible, facilitating potential interaction with a native speaker. Furthermore, the website offers opportunities to connect with native speakers through chat features, functioning as a social learning network where users can “friend” others and participate in games.
Each lesson concludes with an exam designed to evaluate learning. These exams feature question types requiring users to select the correct meaning of a phrase, drag expressions to their appropriate locations, or spell words based on auditory cues.
Busuu presents itself as a robust platform for those dedicated to language acquisition. A review of its mobile application will follow.
Busuu on the Android Platform
The Busuu application for Android devices is available at no cost. It offers synchronization capabilities with the Busuu website, allowing users to seamlessly resume their learning progress from their desktop computers.
Mobile App Quiz Interface
The following illustrates the appearance of a typical quiz within the mobile application:
Users construct sentences by manipulating words through a drag-and-drop interface.
Potential Drawbacks and Unexpected Features
A minor inconvenience arises from certain questions being presented in audio format only. This could prove problematic in public settings where unexpected audio playback is undesirable.
Furthermore, the “Review Your Mistakes” function exhibits an unusual behavior. Upon requesting a review of errors, the system occasionally introduces new learning material alongside the identified mistakes, potentially causing confusion.
Continuing and Starting New Lessons
The application facilitates not only the completion of ongoing lessons but also the initiation of new courses.
Vocabulary Review and Touchscreen Compatibility
The vocabulary review component employs a swiping mechanism for navigating between words. The entire application is designed to function intuitively with touchscreen devices.

Concluding Remarks
Undoubtedly, achieving fluency in a new language demands significant dedication. However, utilizing a mobile application that integrates seamlessly with a comprehensive website can mitigate typical obstacles to consistent study, like perceived time constraints.
