Laurene Powell Jobs Backs Nuclear Startup X-Energy with Amazon - $700M

X-Energy Secures Additional Funding for Advanced Nuclear Reactors

X-Energy, a pioneering nuclear technology startup, has successfully increased its Series C funding round by $200 million, building upon an initial $500 million investment.

Strategic Partnerships and Investment

This latest financial boost follows a significant agreement announced in October with Amazon. This collaboration encompasses both investment and development initiatives focused on constructing 300 megawatts of nuclear power capacity in the Pacific Northwest region.

The expanded funding round attracted several new investors. These include Ares Management, Emerson Collective (led by Laurene Powell Jobs), Jane Street, and Segra Capital Management.

Benefiting from Growing Demand

X-Energy is among a growing number of nuclear energy startups experiencing increased investment. This trend is fueled by the rapid expansion of AI-driven data centers and continued governmental support for nuclear power, notably stemming from policies enacted during the Trump administration.

Reactor Specifications and Fuel Technology

The company’s Xe-100 reactors are projected to produce 80 megawatts of electrical power each. This output is sufficient to supply approximately 50,000 households.

These reactors utilize TRISO fuel, an advanced fuel type engineered for enhanced safety compared to conventional fuel rods.

Each fuel “pebble” comprises roughly 18,000 microscopic uranium particles, each coated in carbon and resembling a poppy seed. A single reactor will contain a total of 200,000 of these pebbles.

Projected Timeline and Funding Allocation

X-Energy anticipates the first reactor serving Amazon will begin operations in the early 2030s.

The newly acquired funds will be allocated to finalize the reactor design and secure necessary licensing approvals. Furthermore, resources will be directed towards the construction of the initial phase of the company’s fuel fabrication facility, located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

This investment represents a significant step forward in the development and deployment of advanced nuclear energy solutions.
