Monetizing AI: Koah's Approach to Advertising in AI Applications

Startups and developers are continually seeking effective methods to generate revenue from their AI products. Koah, a recently funded startup having secured $5 million in seed capital, proposes that advertising will be a significant component of this solution.

The Rise of AI-Generated Advertising

Many internet users have encountered AI-generated advertisements, though these are currently infrequent within AI chatbot interactions. Nic Baird, co-founder and CEO of Koah, posits that this situation is poised for change.

“A widespread implementation is inevitable once these technologies extend beyond their current concentration in San Francisco,” Baird explained to TechCrunch via Zoom. “This pattern has been observed repeatedly throughout history.”

Focusing on the "Long Tail" of AI Apps

Koah’s strategy diverges from attempting to integrate advertising into established platforms like ChatGPT. Instead, the company is concentrating on the “long tail” – a broad spectrum of applications built upon foundational AI models, particularly those serving users outside the United States.

Initially, consumer AI products targeted affluent, “prosumer” demographics, monetizing through subscription models. However, Baird notes that reaching millions of users in regions like Latin America necessitates alternative approaches, as these users are unlikely to subscribe at a rate of $20 per month.

Developers may face challenges in generating subscription revenue while still incurring the same inference costs as others.

Unlocking Potential with Advertising

Koah believes that successful AI chat advertising can unlock the potential of “vibe coded” applications that might otherwise be prohibitively expensive to operate at scale without venture capital funding.

Currently, Koah is actively serving advertisements within applications such as AI assistant Luzia, parenting app Heal, student research tool Liner, and creative platform DeepAI. Advertisers utilizing the platform include UpWork, General Medicine, and Skillshare.

Relevant and Sponsored Content

These advertisements are clearly identified as sponsored content and are designed to appear during pertinent moments within user chats. For instance, a user seeking advice on startup strategies might be presented with an ad from UpWork, connecting them with relevant freelance professionals.

Koah's Performance and Effectiveness

Many publishers initially doubt the viability of advertising within AI chats. Others have experienced limited success with existing adtech solutions like AdMob and AppLovin.

However, Baird asserts that Koah delivers 4x to 5x greater effectiveness, achieving clickthrough rates of 7.5%. Early partners have reportedly earned $10,000 within their first 30 days on the platform. Furthermore, Koah aims to minimize any negative impact on user engagement, ultimately striving for advertisements that enhance the user experience.

Investment and Future Outlook

Koah’s seed funding round was spearheaded by Forerunner, with additional participation from South Park Commons and Andrew Karam, co-founder of AppLovin.

Forerunner partner Nicole Johnson highlighted the critical importance of monetization in the AI landscape. While subscriptions are currently the standard, an exclusive reliance on this model can lead to user fatigue and attrition.

“A diverse range of revenue models is inevitable in Consumer AI, and advertising will undoubtedly play a significant role, mirroring the evolution of internet services over the past decades,” Johnson stated. She views Koah as “building the essential monetization layer for consumer AI services.”

Positioning in the Advertising Ecosystem

Koah’s team has identified AI chats as occupying a middle ground within the advertising funnel – positioned between the awareness-building capabilities of platforms like Instagram and the transaction-focused nature of Google search advertisements.

Users typically utilize chatbots for recommendations and information gathering, but ultimately complete purchases through search engines. Therefore, a key challenge for Koah is accurately identifying and capitalizing on a user’s “commercial intent.”

“Our focus isn’t on simply displaying ads within AI,” Baird clarified. “We’re dedicated to understanding user needs and providing relevant solutions.”
