Klarna Uses AI Avatar of CEO for Earnings Call
Klarna Positions Itself as an AI-Driven Company
Sebastian Siemiatkowski, the founder of buy-now-pay-later firm Klarna, is increasingly emphasizing the company’s transformation into an AI company. During the release of Klarna’s latest quarterly earnings, an AI avatar of Siemiatkowski presented the key highlights, as showcased in a company YouTube video.
Subtle Indicators of AI Presentation
Beyond Siemiatkowski’s declaration, the presentation’s artificial nature wasn’t immediately apparent. However, a few subtle clues were present. The AI avatar exhibited a reduced blink rate compared to typical human behavior.
The voice synchronization was generally effective, though not flawless. Notably, the AI was depicted wearing a brown jacket resembling one from a well-known corporate photograph of the actual Sebastian Siemiatkowski, differing only in the shirt worn.
AI's Impact on Klarna's Performance
As Klarna prepares for its initial public offering, the company is highlighting AI as a crucial factor in reaching 100 million users. The firm attributes its fourth consecutive profitable quarter to its AI implementations.
According to a company blog post, AI-driven streamlining resulted in a workforce reduction of approximately 40%. This led to a significant increase in revenue per employee, reaching nearly $1 million.
Workforce Reduction Details
Sebastian Siemiatkowski confirmed to CNBC that Klarna’s employee count has decreased from around 5,000 to approximately 3,000.
AI CEO Concepts Gain Traction
Siemiatkowski isn’t the first executive to explore the concept of AI replacing a CEO. Artisan, an AI sales agent startup famous for its “stop hiring humans” campaign, previously released an April Fool’s video depicting its CEO, Jaspar Carmichael-Jack, being replaced by an AI counterpart.
The Potential of AI in Executive Roles
The notion of AI CEOs may not be entirely far-fetched. While some CEOs actively participate in technical tasks, the core responsibilities of a CEO involve strategic planning, decision-making, and accountability.
An AI, built upon a robust SATA reasoning model, could effectively analyze vast datasets, study successful business strategies, and leverage this information to make informed decisions.
Research on AI CEO Performance
Research published in the Harvard Business Review last year indicated that an AI, utilizing GPT-4o, could potentially surpass the performance of human CEOs in many areas.
However, the AI CEO in the study was ultimately dismissed by a virtual board. This was due to its inability to effectively manage unforeseen “black swan events,” such as market downturns experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite this, proponents of AI emphasize that this technology is still in its early stages of development. Future AI CEOs may overcome these limitations.
Klarna's Response
Klarna declined to provide further commentary on the matter.
