Kayak AI Mode: Smarter Travel Planning & Booking

Kayak Integrates AI for Enhanced Travel Planning
Kayak, a leading travel search engine, is now incorporating artificial intelligence to assist users in their trip research prior to booking. This week saw the introduction of an “AI Mode” feature.
This new functionality empowers users to pose travel-related inquiries and simultaneously compare and reserve flights, hotels, and rental cars via an AI chatbot directly on the company’s website.
AI Mode Availability and Technology
Currently, the feature is accessible on both desktop and mobile web platforms. It leverages Kayak’s existing integration with ChatGPT to furnish users with relevant and contextual results.
This launch builds upon the company’s earlier April release of Kayak.ai, which served as a dedicated environment for experimenting with AI technologies.
Functionality and User Applications
Essentially, AI Mode replicates the capabilities of the Kayak.ai website, but is now seamlessly integrated into the core Kayak platform.
Users can utilize the chatbot to brainstorm travel ideas, such as identifying destinations reachable within a specific budget, discovering the most advantageous offers to a favored location, or comparing hotel amenities.
Furthermore, the AI can assist in locating nonstop flights and suitable rental car options.
Open-Ended Queries and Travel Insights
The system also accommodates more expansive questions. For example, a user could ask, “I want to party for NYE — where should I go?” to receive destination recommendations without pre-defined preferences.
Alternatively, the AI can determine optimal flight times based on ticket pricing trends. Kayak has also published a collection of AI prompt examples on its official blog.
Potential Impact and Future Expansion
This feature is particularly beneficial during the initial phases of travel planning, when individuals are simply exploring possibilities.
However, the extent to which AI-driven interactions translate into actual bookings remains to be observed.
Initially, AI Mode is available in English within the United States, with plans for expansion to additional countries and languages later this month.
The company also intends to extend the feature to more platforms and incorporate support for voice-activated requests in the near future.
AI in the Travel Sector
The travel industry is witnessing increasing exploration of AI solutions by both AI developers and travel companies.
Current online booking processes can often be perceived as frustrating and time-consuming for consumers.
To gauge consumer interest in AI-powered solutions, OpenAI recently announced partnerships with travel giants like Expedia and Booking.com (the latter being a subsidiary of Kayak’s parent company, Booking Holdings).
These collaborations allow these services to function as applications within the ChatGPT environment.
Kayak’s Strategic Approach
In contrast, Kayak’s decision to host the AI chatbot directly on its website may grant the company more direct access to valuable consumer insights regarding AI usage.
This direct access could prove crucial for refining and optimizing the AI experience.
