John Deere Self-Driving Tractor Launching This Fall

John Deere's 8R Autonomous Tractor: Availability and Development

According to John Deere, the 8R tractor has undergone field testing with a limited number of customers for “several seasons.” Extensive evaluation is crucial before deploying any autonomous machinery, and this tractor is no exception.

Prototype versions of the self-driving tractor have been tested in agricultural settings since the autumn of 2019. Sales of the complete system are scheduled to commence in the fall of 2022.

Independent Development

Despite the recent acquisition of Bear Flag Robotics, John Deere confirms that the 8R’s autonomous technology was developed independently. This system has been in development for multiple years.

While future products leveraging Bear Flag Robotics’ technology will focus on retrofitting existing tractors with self-driving capabilities, the current emphasis remains on the integrated solution offered by the 8R.

Technical Specifications and Operation

The system utilizes six stereo camera pairs, processing visual data with the aid of two Nvidia Jetson modules. This configuration provides a comprehensive 360-degree view of the tractor’s surroundings.

Initial operations, such as tilling, are guided by a GPS system and geofencing technology. Remote control and monitoring are facilitated through the John Deere Operations Center Mobile application.

This application provides farmers with real-time access to images, live video feeds, and operational data.

Initial Rollout and Availability

The 8R will initially be available through select dealerships located in the upper-Midwest region of the United States. John Deere will provide support to farmers during the implementation process.

The autonomous tractor is currently being showcased at the CES technology exhibition in Las Vegas this week.
