Joby Aviation Launches $300M Public Offering for eVTOL Release

Joby Aviation Announces $300 Million Public Offering
Joby Aviation, a company developing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, has initiated a public offering. The offering aims to sell up to $300 million worth of its common stock, as detailed in a recent regulatory document.
Recent Funding and Future Plans
In October, Joby secured $222 million through underwriters. This new public offering supplements that investment, potentially allowing the company to accumulate a total of $522 million. These funds are crucial as Joby prepares for commercial operations, slated to begin in 2025.
The capital generated from this raise, combined with existing funds, will be allocated to several key areas. These include securing certification for its aircraft, scaling up manufacturing capabilities, and covering general operational expenses.
Expansion into Major Cities and Partnerships
Joby intends to introduce its air taxi services in several prominent urban centers next year. Initial launch locations include New York City and Los Angeles, with collaborations established with Delta Air Lines and Uber.
Furthermore, the company is planning expansions into Dubai and Abu Dhabi. A significant contract with the Department of Defense, currently valued at $131 million, also contributes to Joby’s portfolio.
Regulatory Approvals and Certification
Before commencing commercial flights, Joby must finalize its type certification. This process verifies that the aircraft’s design adheres to stringent safety and airworthiness regulations.
The timing of this public offering coincides with a recent decision by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA has now authorized eVTOL aircraft to operate within U.S. airspace alongside traditional helicopters and airplanes. Guidelines for eVTOL pilot training and operational procedures have also been established.
Investment History and Current Status
Earlier this month, Joby received a $500 million investment from existing stakeholder Toyota. To date, the company has raised a total of $2.6 billion, according to data from PitchBook.
A company spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that they are currently unable to provide further commentary regarding the fundraising efforts.
Updates and Corrections
This article has been updated to accurately reflect the current value of Joby’s contract with the Department of Defense and the total anticipated amount to be raised through the offering.
Clarification: The $300 million public offering is a distinct event and not an amendment to the October funding round.
